Pat Morgan, winner of five national book awards for her first book, The Concrete Killing Fields, was a former banker, and former elected official in county government when she lost herself--and found herself-- in the basement of a downtown Memphis church with a handful of other volunteers and a steady stream of "street people" with staggering levels of disabilities. Woven into her story of those five years and the homeless people who stole her heart and broke it, are bits of her own story, including the litany of losses that drew her to help people who had lost everything. Think of how much better coffee smells (and, for those of us who love it) tastes, after it's had time to percolate. If the weather is nice, I go for a walk along the river. I've been surprised and deeply gratified by the responses of people that I never expected would be interested in homelessness, mental illness, substance abuse, or my personal story. I knew I'd found my calling when I lost myself--and found myself--trying to help helping homeless people in the basement of my church. I didn't know that it would lead to my literally living out my dreams. It's really rewarding when someone tells me that after reading my book, they're wondering if they've "found their calling."(less)

Can We Really End Homelessness

Yes, we can, but it's going to take a lot more than housing. Why? Because homelessness is also about mental illness and substance abuse, teen pregnancies and school dropouts, learning disabilities and low educational levels, child abuse and neglect and domestic violence, an under-funded, fragmented, full-of-holes mental health and social service system, low-wage jobs, high-cost childcare, poor tra Read more of this blog post »
