“Imagine our challenge in dissecting the fall of Rome as that of an historian two thousand years in the future, after a third millenium of dark ages has ravaged most evidence. Will they speak of the American troops of Petraeus and Eisenhower as if they were the same army? Will they smear together the rule of George Washington and George W. Bush and some other President George circa 2180 as if they were roughly the same executives?”
Tim Kane, Balance: The Economics of Great Powers from Ancient Rome to Modern America

“A Swedish ambassador to the United States joked that nobody in America believes him when he says his country isn't socialist anymore. Liberals still refer to it as a role model, conservatives as a cautionary tale, but it is neither”
Tim Kane, Balance: The Economics of Great Powers from Ancient Rome to Modern America

“Another of the hard things about being in a war, grandchildren, is that although there are times of quiet when the fighting has stopped, you know you will soon be fighting again. Those quiet times give you the chance to think about what has happened. Some of it you would rather not think about, as you remember the pain and the sorrow. You also have time to worry about what will happen when you go into battle again.”
Joseph Bruchac, Code Talker: A Novel About the Navajo Marines of World War Two

“I wish you had been there with me in that picture,” he used to say to Wilsie and me. “It is so lonely being there forever without another Indian.”
Joseph Bruchac, Code Talker: A Novel About the Navajo Marines of World War Two

“The best way to not feel hopeless is to get up and do something. Don’t wait for good things to happen to you. If you go out and make some good things happen, you will fill the world with hope, you will fill yourself with hope.”
Barack Obama

“No one is useless in this world who lightens the burdens of another.”
Charles Dickens

“There is no exercise better for the heart than reaching down and lifting people up.”
John Holmes
