I walked across England in 2013, fulfilling a long-held dream. I'm currently the sexton of an Anglican church in Nova Scotia, which means I am keeper of the keys and opener of doors (and shutter-off of alarms). I have a PhD in medieval studies from the University of Toronto, looking at poetry and philosophy in the works of Dante and Boethius -- both the poetry and the philosophy come into my stories a great deal (and occasionally the Dante and the Boethius).

Victoria Goddard answered Pamela's question: I was reminded recently of Le Guin's short story, The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas, and I read an interview with her about the influences leading to that story - Dostoevsky and William James - and I was wondering if any or all of those were in your mind when developing Fitzroy's difficult childhood? (all three revolve around a scapegoat child, who must suffer so that everybody else has a wonderful life). Oddly enough, I only read Omelas after writing about Fitzroy--I am starting to get into Le Guin now, but she hasn't been a major author for me. (Yet.) Similarly, while I've read a couple of William James's stories, I wouldn't call him an influence. A See Full Answer
