At some point, not too long ago, I realized that much of my morality comes from my father reading Tolkien to my sister and I as we went to bed each night. Before I get too far into this bio, you should know that if your village is being threatened by Orcs, you have my sword.

I'm a writer, dreamer, Dean and a Dad. Also I'm a geek, can't forget the important things, right? Writing, exploring and the unknown have been passions throughout my life. With my debut novel THE UNSEEN, I've finally found a way to connect my interests and nerdy sci-fi pursuits.

Growing up in a small town in Western Massachusetts, I always dreamed of traveling, exploring...of going and doing. I accomplished this through steadfastly burying my nose in all the books, pouri

As someone who still considers himself very much in the category of "aspiring writer", I would say just a few things. Write, write and then keep writing. For my novel THE UNSEEN, I've essentially written two full novels to get to where I am right now. I could see all the other tens of thousands of words as a waste but I actually view them as part of the journey. When I needed them, they were my comfort. They allowed me to better understand my characters and the world I'm trying to build and (hopefully!) they made me a better writer. It has taken me years to get to this point but I don't think I would change a thing if I could.

Actually, that's not entirely true. I would have fought the fear that I had and started writing in my twenties. There are stories in all of us but I let myself believe that I wasn't good enough to let mine out. And hey, maybe I'm not, but I know that I need to write, it's a part of who I am, especially when I'm my best self.

I hope that makes sense! Thanks again for the question!(less)

Teenagers, cryptids, and a helping of hope.

I was stuck in greater Los Angeles traffic yesterday and rather than let the creeping rage monster overwhelm my better nature, I went to my happy place...the world of THE UNSEEN. I geek out on world building, I get way too excited about something that Maeve is going to do in a book that I haven't finished yet (#2) and I get goose bumps thinking about all the Big Damn Heroics in #2 and #3.

Dylan Thomas
“Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rage at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.”
Dylan Thomas, Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night

J.R.R. Tolkien
“I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo.
"So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”
J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring

J.R.R. Tolkien
“It's like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were. And sometimes you didn't want to know the end… because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it’s only a passing thing… this shadow. Even darkness must pass.”
J.R.R. Tolkien, The Two Towers

Alfred Tennyson
“Though much is taken, much abides; and though
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.”
Alfred Lord Tennyson, Idylls of the King and a Selection of Poems

“Doubt kills more dreams than failure ever will.”
