Friday Feast | Valentines and Chocolate

Welcome back to Friday Feast in the tavern! Please forgive the long absence, dear friends. With the additional family caregiving duties, I've temporarily taken a step back here and in my writing. My word for this year is HOPE. I adore this word and one that's powerful when those days appear dark. So hopefully, I'll soon get back to Gunnar and Maeve's story. They are patiently awaiting my return to their world.

Yet for now, I'll celebrate this special day of love with a chocolate (definitely...

Friday Feast | Holiday Bread

Welcome to the last Friday Feast of the year in Mary's Tavern! What a year, my dear friends. I'll be happy when I shut the door on 2024. Whew! For now, I'm sharing a recipe that's been in my family since I was a wee lass. Even the recipe card is worn, and I can barely read the writing. The secret ingredient in this bread in mincemeat. There seems to be a debate over the love/disgust/hate relationship over anything mincemeat. I'm a huge fan, including another debated holiday treat: fruitcake. I...

Friday Feast | Shortbread, Whisky, and the Return of Outlander

Welcome back to Friday Feast in the tavern! 'Tis a special day to celebrate! The second part of Season 7 of Outlander returns today! Yes, I'm a follower, my friends. I started reading the series back in the mid 1990's and then tuned in to the show ten years ago. Outlander premiered two months after my first book became published. Highlanders definitely ruled my world that year, even while I did book signings at the Scottish Games.

As I've stated before, I'm a cookbook collector. Outlander Co...

Friday Feast | Celebrating the Season with Soul Cakes

Welcome back to Friday Feast in the tavern!

I’m in this hazy season where the weather has not cooperated, and my baking has been limited. Almost non-existent. Finally, cooler temperatures have arrived, and I’m able to fire up the oven and bake several of our seasonal foods. Traditionally, I’d make these cakes at Samhain/Halloween. Yet inspiration took hold one chilly morning this week, and I whipped up these tasty cakes.

At this time of year (Samhain), we honor our ancestors with food, son...

Friday Feast | Cinnamon Spice and Everything Delicious

Welcome to Friday Feast in the tavern and the last Friday in August! Are you ready for September? You can bet your orange pumpkins I’m eager for a new month. The weeks sure did whiz by in a flash. As I’ve confessed in previous posts, the baking in the Morgan castle has been almost non-existent this summer. Considering the massive heat we’ve experienced, I had no desire to turn on an oven. However, August brought some slight relief, and I took advantage of the cool mornings for baking.

One of...
