Valentine King was born in North Yorkshire in 1980. He began writing horror stories at the age of eight and hasn't stopped since. He attended the University of Hull, graduating in 2003 before achieving a post graduate teaching qualification in 2005, teaching adults to read and write for two years whilst continuing to write in his spare time.
Valentine's first published collection of twelve short stories was 'Night Terrors,' in 2014, followed soon after by the acclaimed 'After Dark,' a second collection of short stories.
In addition to his fiction work Valentine has also written a guide to children's literature and a guide to self publishing, both available on Amazon. He lives on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors with a dog and cat and is

If you're good enough, people will buy your work. If you're not, keep going until you get better. Nothing comes easy without practising. Write every day you can and read everything you can get your hands on. You learn as much from bad books as from good, see what to avoid, what to use and get better.
Never give your readers chance to get bored but don't underestimate their intelligence. Ask for feedback from people you trust. Be proud of what you do and do it because you love it, not to make money.(less)

Marvin Bell
“Learn the rules, break the rules, make up new rules, break the new rules.”
Marvin Bell

George Orwell
“Modern writing at its worst does not consist in picking out words for the sake of their meaning and inventing images in order to make the meaning clearer. It consists in gumming together long strips of words which have already been set in order by someone else, and making the results presentable by sheer humbug. The attraction of this way of writing is that it is easy. It is easier -- even quicker, once you have the habit -- to say In my opinion it is not an unjustifiable assumption that than to say I think.”
George Orwell, Politics and the English Language

Lev Grossman
“I’ve learned that the creative life may or may not be the apex of human civilization, but either way it’s not what I thought it was. It doesn’t make you special and sparkly. You don’t have to walk alone. You can work in an office — I’ve worked in offices for the past 15 years and written five novels while doing it. The creative life is forgiving: You can betray it all you want, again and again, and no matter how many times you do, it will always take you back.”
Lev Grossman

Roald Dahl
“So please, oh please, we beg, we pray, go throw your TV set away, and in its place you can install, a lovely bookshelf on the wall.”
Roald Dahl

J.K. Rowling
“I have noticed more than once in life that a taste for the ineffably twee can go hand-in-hand with a distinctly uncharitable outlook on the world. I once shared an office with a woman who had covered the wall space behind her desk with pictures of fluffy kitties; she was the most bigoted, spiteful champion of the death penalty with whom it has ever been my misfortune to share a kettle. A love of all things saccharine often seems present where there is a lack of real warmth or charity.”
J.K. Rowling, Short Stories from Hogwarts of Power, Politics and Pesky Poltergeists
