A Grandmother's Prayers

"If it weren't for my grandmother's prayers, I might not be here today."

I have heard that comment often as I have spoken to women's groups. We really do count on the love, support and prayers of older women. Now, that I am one of those older women, I realize it is my turn to support and pray for women younger than myself.

My mother-in-law will soon be ninety-one. Her health is failing. She is often confused. She forgets our names in conversation and needs help remembering what day it is.

Sometimes, when we think she is sleeping, she will suddenly burst in to spontaneous prayer for our family. She has no difficulty remembering names at those times. She prays with clarity, urgency and passion.

We know that sometime in the next couple of years, we will lose her. I think it is her prayers I will miss the most.

But, her prayers will live on in our memories and will continue to be an inspiration to every member of her family.
