I have to say that I've never had a hero sheriff before but I'm glad Billy Reed is my first! Never have I written a more pure man than this Levi-wearing lawman! Justice is in his DNA and he'll do anything to make sure people within Riker County are safe...And that goes doubly for his family.

When I first started writing the new recruit Caleb Foster, I was worried his resentment at being transferred would interfere with his connection with Alyssa...However, after their first meeting I was more than invested in this pair! Suzy Simmons is one of my favorite heroines. Not only does she show up in every book but she's very much a part of the fabric of the sheriff's department. But that doesn't mean everything is always so easy for her. Being partnered with the rich and charming James Callahan is definitely more than she bargained for and THAT was so much fun to write!

But really. Not only did I just finish off THE PROTECTORS OF RIKER COUNTY series by turning in Book 6 THREE DAYS AGO, I also got to welcome the first book in the series to shelves mid-October and then eBooks on November 1! 

So, I followed my tradition of saying YAY to a new release with a Parks and Recreation gif to celebrate!

SMALL-TOWN FACE-OFF follows the sheriff of Riker County and his amazing blue jeans into the new world of a fictional county in South Alabama! Since I live in South Alabama and have grown up here, I make sure to stay true to how horrible the humidity is, how the gossip mill always turns, and how sweet tea is just something you can't escape.

Welp. This recent purchase just became one of my absolute favorites! I posted about pre-ordering this gem a while ago BUT I labeled it as a kid's book. It. Is. Not. So, what is it exactly?

A Die Hard fan's new favorite book.

Plus its description is 100 percent intriguing for fantasy and scifi lovers!

I've been known to INSTA-buy books based on covers/content. Christopher Walken A to Z: The Man, the Movies, the Legend by Robert Schnakenberg was no different. Not only do I love Christopher Walken (we have a signed cowbell from Will Ferrell that we bought through a charity drive because WE NEED MORE COWBELL, obviously) but this book is just gorgeous in its own right. The gold only highlights the sassiness that is Walken. 

Pure beauty.

Originally bought for a centerpiece to decorate wedding number three, this good-looking sonuvabitch sits on one of the top shelves...And occasionally leans out to judge you.

Have you ever just looked at the condition of someone else's book and thought, my God they are horrible people?! Well I'm sure you're about to think that about me but LET ME PREFACE THIS POST WITH SOME FACTS!

My father bought Cycle of the Werewolf by Stephen King in 1983.

It survived college, moving, baby me, tornadoes and hurricanes, moving again, toddler me, moving a few more times, a divorce, kid me, a marriage, teen me, and then being stolen by adult me...Where it was put through college again, more moves, a marriage, weather insanity, bursting pipes, and three curious cats.

Basically this is one of my life books that I intend to keep until one of my future children take it, try to protect it, and eventually have their no-good, book-stealing child start the cycle up again.

So before you do what I do when I see such a worn, torn book, know that its missing cover is the result of a well-loved but rough journey! At the end of the day the lack of cover is a badge honor! This book is a survivor! 

Now that I have that rambling preface out of the way...

I have kept it no secret that I love Stephen King and his writing. I've likened his prose to magic and, at times when I get stuck with my own writing, I often turn to one of his books for a jolt of inspiration. Admittedly, I have no idea where this love for his work started. Whether it was from the books or movie adaptations, I have no clue.

My mom was a reader, my dad barely was, and I vaguely remember my uncle praising the Dark Tower series. Growing up there was talk of Misery and The Stand. Then of course IT. Carrie was somewhere in there too and the ending to The Langoliers movie really messed me up. For the life me, I can't remember a single point that transformed me into an avid fan. But I do remember this book and the fact that I've never run across it outside of my father's home or mine which makes it feel even more special.

I've not searched the web for it but if you're a Stephen King fan you might want to pull up that ole Google! Definitely a book worth donning your bookshelf...Though maybe try really hard to NOT lose the cover!

When I transitioned from social media manager and freelance blogger to full-time writer, I was adamant about blogging frequently and with enthusiasm. Three posts a week! Heck, four posts a week! Definitely nothing below two, for sure!

I underestimated the time it takes to write several books a year + dealing with the technical side of editing, design, and marketing said books. Not to mention that one time our first floor flooded because a pipe deciding it didn't want to be a pipe any more. BUT, don't count me down and out yet!

Since this is the first one, though, I decided to include four books I recently purchased and then a trio of some of my favorite blue books! #SorryNotSorry

For those of you who follow the newsletter, you might be familiar with this post! It was a part of the my first one ever and featured the insight of a model and actor, Samy Osman! And not to mention, the cover model for my BE ON THE LOOKOUT: BODYGUARD! So, in celebration for BOLO: BODYGUARD's book birthday today I've finally decided to make the interview public right here!

Ever wonder about that man or woman on the cover of the Intrigue you're reading? I know I have! Thanks to SAMY OSMAN, the cover model for BE ON THE LOOKOUT: BODYGUARD (and forever in my mind the character Jonathan Carmichael), now we have some answers! Here's a little about the actor and then the process behind becoming the character on the cover!

Although my focus is acting, I've been encouraged to stay open to modeling work ever since I got started in the industry. So after moving to Toronto (Canada), I eventually got sent out to a Harlequin cover shoot through my modeling agency. A lot of covers are shot here! The way it usually works is that art directors working on the book covers put out a breakdown of what they're looking for in terms of a character description. Modeling agents in turn suggest models who they feel could be a good fit, and then if they're chosen, they get offered the job. Sometimes the art director and/or photographer will also request certain models based on having worked with them before and being a good match for the character.

The process of shooting the book is only part of the whole thing. Art directors come to the set with a lot of the work already done. Character descriptions, the vibe of the "scene", the setting, basically an idea of what they want is laid out on a sheet and all this is discussed with the photographer and their team. They in turn, prepare the set and set the mood with lights, props, sometimes even building part of the set.

While the prep is being done, the models go through hair, makeup and wardrobe. The female models usually spend quite a bit of time in the makeup chair while us guys are lucky and usually have time to sit back as usually very little time is spent on us. Sometimes a few outfits are tried out before settling on something. Sometimes we start with something, and end up changing into something else.
As this is going on, a few test shots will be done before things sort of get locked in...although it can always change throughout the shoot. Once things are good and everyone's happy, the models get into the scene and the photographer shoots away!

Once the shoot is over, favorites are sent back to HQ. Eventually a picture is decided on, the post work begins! Images are edited, mostly to add a backdrop. Although the lighting and some of the props are indeed real, usually the background is usually added in later; sort of like the behind the scenes "green screen" special effects videos you may have seen in the past. However in some cases, the pictures are shot "on location", so no backdrop is added in the edits.

That's the gist of it! A lot of people are involved in each cover, and a lot of work is put into each and every one of them...more than I've described as I'm mostly exposed to what happens in the studio. Of course, none of this would be possible without the authors' books to put a cover on!

This time we're looking at SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITIES, the last book in my Orion Security series. And, if I do say so myself, the most exciting of the series! Maybe that's because I'm a little partial to the heroine...It's Nikki Waters! Finally we get to see her story plus how she gets along with the new recruit, Jackson Fields! Add in a whole heap of baddies and SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITIES is one heck of a thrill ride through Dallas, Texas!
