“Sex work is a low entry-barrier job which functions as a failsafe for many groups marginalized by capitalism: women, people of color, LGBTQ people, disabled people, and poor and criminalized people...This is why whorephobia is actually an intertwined combination of stigmas. The way people loathe sex workers—the way they think of us as dirty, dumb, perverse, amoral agents of infection with no self-respect—is heavily coded with misogyny, racism, classism, transmisogyny, homophobia and ableism.”

“Britta wanted to try to turn a guard. Tamara thought it was idiotic.

“What are you going to do? Buy him beer and tell him about Kropotkin?”

I envisioned the conversation:

Vanguard: Wage Slave, are you aware that you are but a wire nail in the toolbox of capitalism?
Wage Slave: I thought I was a chisel.
Vanguard: No, the petit bourgeois are the chisels.
Wage Slave: What about a washer set? Can I be a washer set?
Vanguard: No, my ferret, run free! For I have unlocked your collar with knowledge!
Wage Slave: I want to be a chisel.

Vanguard pushes screaming ferret through hole in fence cut by the clippers of noblesse oblige.

“Well, maybe we could bribe him,” said Britta. Tamara laughed.

“With what? Health insurance?”
Vanessa Veselka, Zazen

“Radical feminists didn’t need FBI infiltration — the mechanism for sisterly cannibalization was already well under way.”
Susie Bright, Big Sex Little Death: A Memoir

“I was immensely moved by this novel when I read it recently and yet I cannot think of anything to say about it except that it is wonderful. The people are not characters, there is no plot in the usual sense. What can you bring to bear: verisimilitude — to what? You can merely say over and over that it is very good, very beautiful, that when you were reading it you were happy.”
Elizabeth Hardwick, Seduction and Betrayal

“OMG YOU GUYS it has come to my attention that SOMEONE on the internet is saying that my fictional 19th century zombies are NOT SCIENTIFICALLY SOUND. Naturally, I am crushed. To think, IF ONLY I’d consulted with a zombologist or two before sitting down to write, I could’ve avoided ALL THIS EMBARRASSMENT.”
Cherie Priest

“The word book acted as a transient stimulus”
Charlotte Bronte, Jane Eyre

Caty I read Muriel Spark too long ago to really remember but I remember being impressed by the cool spareness of her tone.
& I loved Two Girls Fat & Thin by Gaitskill, the one with the Ayn Randoid in it. Veronica is abt the esort, right? I'll look into it.
I read Fifth Sacred Thing and just couldn't get through it--liked some ideas, but in the end, just too woo woo. & I was really looking forward and being open minded--so sad.
Tell me about Edna O' Brien?

Renate Hi Caty... Hmm... I'm trying to think of book recc's for you since you so kindly suggested reading material for me!! From one bookworm to another, here are my considered suggestions... Have you read much by Muriel Spark? if not, then maybe you would like "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie" or "The Girls of Slender Means"? they are classic and Edna O'Brien's "Country Girls" trilogy is pretty amazing... and "Veronica", by Mary Gaitskill, kicks total butt. Another favorite: "The Fifth Sacred Thing" by Starhawk (yes, a little New-Age-y for your tastes, I know, but give it a try and you might be surprised - there are a lot of great feminist/queer political and sci-fi/fantasy elements to it. very juicy). Also, anything by Neal Postman is worth reading, by my reckoning.
