What NaNoWriMo Means for Writers
I can will write a book
That evil word that every person experiences at one point or another. Writer's especially. You know what I'm talking about, that voice in your head that tells you when you wake up that you need to write today, and the second voice chimes in that you're 'just not feeling it' or 'don't actually have time today'. Worse still, is the even more evil concept of writer's block, which all writer's experience at one point or another. And if you're me, you experience it a lot.
Fortunately, there is a cure that happens once a year. In November, you can participate in National Novel Writing Month.
Why participate?
According to the organisation’s website, National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) is a fun, seat-of-your-pants approach to creative writing. On November 1, participants begin working towards the goal of writing a 50,000-word novel by 11:59 PM on November 30. Valuing enthusiasm, determination, and a deadline, NaNoWriMo is for anyone who has ever thought fleetingly about writing a novel. The point is to put on the writer hat and JUST DO IT. Bite the bullet, take a comfortable seat in a quiet space, and put your pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard) and produce a working first draft of a novel. Think about it - that's less than 1700 words a day. Definitely feasible.
How does it work?
NaNoWriMo kicked off on 1 November 2015. You can sign up on their website (http://nanowrimo.org/). By signing up, you can track your progress and have access to an international support system of writers trying to complete the same challenge.
National Novel Writing Month is really an amazing way to end the procrastination many writers feel when embarking on a new project, and will ensure that you write every day. It may not be a best-seller, but it will be a first draft that you can then sit down and perfect until it becomes something you would like to publish.
Good luck to everyone who will be participating in this event. As for me, I will be using the event to complete the last 50 000 words of my half-finished first draft. Watch this space peeps!
Happy writing!
