The Book !

If you are asked, which is the single most resourceful and impactful product ever created by humans, what will your answer be? There is one product line that is unmatched in its impact upon humanity – Books. You remove books from the face of earth and our surroundings will not be anything like they are.

It’s just bewildering, how single handedly books have accelerated the growth and progress of mankind. The experiences, the discoveries and the inventions of previous generations are passed onto the next. This phenomenonis not shared by any other species on the planet and humans do it at an altogether different level, through books.

The Book is one of the finest creations of humanity and its contribution to the kind of life you and I live right now is beyond reckoning. I mean, the mind just goes into a spin, itis just not able to put it together how the world would be like if the book hadn’t been created. It’s the longest surviving product line in human history and no single product has contributed to the advancement of human life as much as books.

Since its inception, the book has undergone numerous transformations in terms of what material is used to put the content upon, how the content is put on the material, how the book is packaged together, how it is sharedwith others and how it is read by the reader. From clay tablets to dried leaves to silk to papyrus to paper, the foundation material of the book continues toevolve. From making markings to writing to typing, the way content is put has evolved over time too. From being stacked to being tied to being rolled to being bonded, the packaging of book has become more and more compact. No other single product can boast of such alterations in its design history.

In this information age where you and I are surrounded by numerous digital devices, for the first time in its long journey over millenniums, the book is beginning its gradual transition from a physical format to a soft format. And like all preceding transitions, the user experience of handling and reading the book is getting better and superior.

Phones have successfully integrated the camera into them, first with still photography and then with video. Now phones are en route to integrate books into them with the added functionality of allowing you to read in dark. The night mode turns the background black and the characters appear in white, it’s a pleasure to keep the night mode on even in the day. It’s amazing how phones are de-cluttering our living area by continuously reducing the number of objects that we use, all the while improving upon the experience of availing the functionalities of an alarm clock, a regular clock, a calculator, a calendar, a camera, a sound recorder, a music player, a video player and many more in just a single object. Now, phones and tablets have finally become ready to integrate one of the oldest and most amazing product ever created by humans, the book.#SCREWEDSumit Dahiya
