When I was a young child, my imagination was a constant presence in my life. I would write story after story. It was an endless supply. As I grew up, I held tightly to the dream of someday publishing my own books. When it came time to choose a college and career path, I even considered majoring in creative writing. I contemplated moving to Virginia and enrolling in a school there that had serendipitously sent me a brochure in the mail at just the time I was attempting to make a decision. I know now it was fear that halted me. Mention to someone that you want to be a writer and you are almost guaranteed a story about a relative who is busing tables waiting for her big break.

Instead I chose a more realistic option and pursued a career in teaching. I figured I could entertain my students with the stories I wrote and select the best ones to send off to publishers. Well . . . it was a good idea in theory, but I admit I never took the time to write those stories. I tucked my dream of being a published author away in my mind and dedicated myself to teaching elementary schoolchildren. I LOVED the energy of young children. It stirred the playful side of my personality that lies dormant when existing in the adult world. After six years, however, I realized I was not a fit for public education. Instead of the model of education expanding to meet my changing dimensions, I came to understand that my personal growth stretched beyond the limitations offered to me as a teacher. I was to move on and forward!
In the summer of 2013, for the first time since I was fourteen years old, I was free from the frenzy of a constant schedule, commitments, and a busy mind. Remember the days when you were a child and it was perfectly acceptable to ride your bike all day long? I watch the children in the apartment complex here in Asheville and they simply ooze joy as they race each other up the hill on their bicycles. As adults, we seem to forget how to attain this inner feeling that is bliss. It is my dream to remember how to live a new way of life that is simple and more in balance with my true self. That side of my personality that comes bounding forward when in the presence of children.
Ironically, or purposely, it was just at this time that my thirst for writing returned. The stories literally poured out of me! Twelve short stories in all written in the ways of long ago. Instead of sitting at a desk and hand writing or typing out the stories, the twelve stories in "The Day the Sun Spoke" were all originally told aloud by myself and shared with family and friends. As the first story I spoke aloud teaches, when you have a desire, it never truly disappears. You bury it, you hide it, you run from it, but it is always there with you waiting for the day when you take the leap, climb the highest mountain and step off. Only you don't fall . . . you fly!
