I'm going to write... you know... soon

So I'm just about to start a new short story. So far I have the title. Now, for the hard part. To write the story.

I'm writing this blog as a kick in the ass to stop being a lazy writer and start being an actual writer. Maybe after I watch a show... or two.

The Casual Vacancy

I just finished The Casual Vacancy by J.K. Rowling and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by how good it was. Whenever an author is primarily known for one work you always worry about a sophomore slump.

Thankfully, that was not the case. The characters in The Casual Vacancy are very deep and act in a very believable manner.

The plot is driven by the actions of the characters who usually make decisions on bad or incomplete information. Just like in real life mistakes are made more often than not, especially when people become emotionally involved in the situation.

A must read if you enjoy straight up fiction or if you enjoyed the Potter books and are 16+

Movie vs Book

I think one of the most common heard phrases after a movie based on a book comes out it is "The book was much better."
The truth is that is probably the way I feel most of the time. There are exceptions of course.
1. Jurassic Park. I saw the movie first and read the book shortly after. Michael Crichton is definitely a hit and miss for me and this is mostly a hit, but it's only a good book while I would argue that the movie is a four star plus.

2. Casino Royale although I admit that's a little unfair given the time in between release of the book and the movie. The book is good again, but the movie is one of Bond's best.

3. The Godfather. The book is at best a good story and that may only be because of my deep love of the movie. Compared to the movie the book has deep flaws.

First Blood

I just finished reading (audiobook, but it counts) First Blood by David Morrell. I've seen First Blood the movie at least five times and am very familiar with it. I even do a Sylvester Stallone podcast (Slycast) that lets me really engross myself in Rambo.

That being said the book is a very different experience. Rambo and his adversary Sheriff Teasle are much closer in temperament in the book than in the film. They are both right and both wrong in the book and it's a much different experience. I highly recommend this book.
