Millie Thom is a former geography and history teacher with a degree in geology and a particular passion for the Anglo Saxon and Viking era. She was born in Southport, Lancashire, in 1947, and happily admits to being a 'boomer'.

After completing a teacher training course in Liverpool in 1968, she moved to Yorkshire to take up her first teaching post. This was at a secondary school in a small mining village, where most of the children - and more than a few of the staff - spoke in a dialect riddled with 'thees', 'thous', 'hast thas' and wilt thas'. She also met her husband to be at this time, a teacher at a rival school - the rivalry always being in the not-so-gentle sport of rugby!

For me, writer's block arises from my own lack of thorough enough research regarding particular historical events. Naturally, these can be overcome by buckling down to scan my text books or online sites. In other genres, I imagine the same idea could apply - a scene, a chapter, or even just a conversation needs more careful planning. I've no doubt other authors would disagree with my ideas, but I maintain that the imagination/thought processes haven't stopped during 'writer's block'. They're simply waiting for the fresh imput that further research or planning must provide.(less)

When I'm writing, I become a part of the story I'm creating, and since my genre is historical fiction, it's like a journey into the past. (less)

About the Month of April

April is the 4th month of the year and has 30 days. It is the second month of spring and a time of planting and spring cleaning. In the southern hemisphere, April is the same as October in the Northern Hemisphere. It is also my birthday month, so it has to be my favourite! (Well, at least it was my favourite in my younger days.)

In the earliest Roman calendar, April was the second month of the
