Kim wrote her first critically acclaimed (if you call her fourth grade teacher a critic, and she does) short story when she was 9 years old. It was about Christmas in a Cave, and it featured such topical, ground-breaking subjects as homelessness & cave dwelling. She's been writing ever since. The state of publication depends on who you ask.

She sometimes teaches academic writing and how to read literature at a university in her hometown and tries to convince college students that it really is cool to like poetry.

It was a sign, I think, that I just wasn't ready to finish. To be a "grown up."

For fiction, I try to write a little bit every day. Even if it's just a few hundred words, if you write every day, you keep in practice. And if I can't get a little writing out, I research, do a Pinterest folder for the story, or, believe it or not, take a nap. A lucid nap can add a story element better than you realize. (less)

The fame and fortune. HAH HAH HAH!

Actually, the best thing is when someone reads your work and says "I loved it when you..." and they can SEE that thing you imagined, and they stayed up all night reading it. That sharing of your mental space is quite exciting. (less)

Adjustments Galore

Every time I say to myself "wow, self, you should really try writing in your online blog more often" and resolve to do this, suddenly there's a huge time jump to about a year ahead and I haven't written here. The times I notice this tend to sync up with the summertime, when, traditionally, I am off work (formally. I often am working anyway, but in a less "getting paid" kind of way.)

So let's just

“kids. “We’ll be in the break room if you need us,” said Sloane, with uncharacteristic gentleness. Still holding my brother up, she turned and led him away, first out of the bullpen and finally out of view. I stayed frozen where I was, feeling colder than any time since I had eaten the apple, and wondered what the hell we were going to do next. Demi, of all people, broke”
