John Daniel Thieme is "a wandering poet always in pursuit of the perfect word and dedicated to an almost Augustinian quest for beauty and truth".

Thieme is the author of two collections of poetry--the ghost dancers (2014) and the forthcoming paulinskill hours and other poems (2016). He contributed an introduction and notes to a recent edition of John Donne's Holy Sonnets (2014) and recently translated Chaucer's Anelida and Arcite into Modern English (2016). His research spans poetry, literary criticism, linguistics, history, theology, and folklore, with a keen interest in the intersection of faith, folklore, and art in narratives of pilgrimage and martyrdom; and in depictions of evil and death.

star-made shadows. Neruda's Poema 20.

This poem, number 20, in Pablo Neruda's 1924 collection Veinte poemas de amor y una canción desesperada (Twenty Love Poems and Song of Despair) continues to haunt me, and its incantation of sorrow echoes in my mind.

Neruda takes several lines to express why these are "the saddest lines" and it comes in the indecision over three words: "I loved her". Indecision tends to be insidious in something as Read more of this blog post »

“. . .in your light, had I learned to love, here
in your beauty, could I speak
knowing of this space close within
as the breath held inside a garden rose, there—
there is no time.”
John Daniel Thieme

“beneath the stars that drift; she sighed and said
"Every tale of a love
can only be a tale of ghosts that linger
in these spaces we
can never hold,"—as the wind
gave echo”
John Daniel Thieme, the ghost dancers

“those whom love has held, has held here in time
curious, in this labyrinth of roses—it
will go on holding, though in cruelty—of
stars we could not reach for, but still remembered.”
John Daniel Thieme, the ghost dancers

“we lived depravity
and called it truth, silencing
our dreaming, and
our love, discarding
things holy.”
John Daniel Thieme, paulinskill hours and other poems

“. . .in your light, had I learned to love, here
in your beauty, could I speak
knowing of this space close within
as the breath held inside a garden rose, there—
there is no time.”
John Daniel Thieme

“I wish to go down under the waters—
the cool, crystalline waters that I knew, where all
that is, here, existing, is
is only to be lost within the susurrations
and the rumours of water and the evening star
we wait for...”
John Daniel Thieme, paulinskill hours and other poems

“. . .our whispered words, faintly in the darkness, dissolving
within the trees—then, fleeting words of consolation
would not suffice if feigned, and flippant words
confessed reluctance—our words
were meaningless uttered on the wind. . .”
John Daniel Thieme, paulinskill hours and other poems

“To forget would mean the things we never knew
had never waited to be known, never waited
to be forgotten, had never been; waiting
beneath the long dead stars
in time. . .”
