Smart ensemble casts working at cross purposes, intricate plots that challenge the reader but ultimately satisfy, and nuanced characters capable of conveying more by what they imply than what they state directly—these are some of the literary niches Douglas J. Bornemann seeks to fill with his work. By night, he blends his diverse experiences as a lawyer, bench biologist/geneticist, and long-time gamer to painstakingly craft compelling fantasy narratives. By day, he leverages that same arsenal to help professors hone persuasive grant proposals. His current writing efforts are aided by consummate book critic and ginger tabby Reshi, who dropped by one day and decided to stay.

I'm so glad you enjoyed the chapter titles. Those titles often required considerable percolation time before they coalesced. Although I haven't always done it this way, my current protocol is to complete a chapter and then come up with the title. That trend began when I started writing DoHD, since it was originally conceived as a serial. I'm likely to be most sensitive to a chapter's nuances when it's still fresh, and nuance is key to distilling that cunning twist I've come to view as so essential. I'm pretty fond of "Turnabout" too, but if pressed, I'd have to say my favorite has to be "Object of the Proposition."(less)

Building a Better Fantasy Series – Keys to the Dreamweaver Chronicles

Fantasy Series vs. Mousetraps: There are as many ways to build fantasy series as there are mousetraps. While preferences for particular styles of mousetraps vary, they succeed or fail based on whether they fulfill their core purpose – catching mice. Fantasy series preferences vary as well, but they must still achieve their core purpose – to catch and hold target-readers’ attention.
