In their cramped, rundown apartment, Tim, Jess, and their unpredictable cat Harvey are barely hanging on—struggling with money, bad neighbors, and a building with more locked doors than answers. Substack Changes and so Must I

Joe with the new No Dogs in Philly paperback

Greetings friends.

When I first joined Substack, I had no idea what I was doing. It was all an experiment. Then a vision took shape. I would use Substack as a delivery platform for my books, publishing serialized chapters and then mailing out the ebook when the serial was completed…and that kind of worked.

Kind of, but not really.

Every step of the way, I had to swim upstream. Substack wasn’t — and isn’t — built for serialized fiction. You can’t even sort...

🙏 Thanks Again 🙏

Joe, moments before attacking me

Thank you again for subscribing, reading, commenting, and sharing my posts. And extra special thanks to everyone who heeded my call last week to upgrade to paid. No one just gives you $50 if they don't believe in you. No one sits down and spends a weekend reading your work if they aren't getting value from it.

I appreciate the confidence you've shown in me. Everything you give, I put back into writing. Every dollar buys me free time to write more books. If I can ro...

👁️ In case you missed it...

Dear readers,

Since I started this publication a little more than a year ago, I have published a new chapter or short story every single Friday at 8 a.m. EST.

I've released two full novels, two novellas, over a dozen short stories, and RUOK?, which is entirely its own thing.

So I’m taking this week and next to catch my breath and give you all a chance to catch up on any reading you might have missed. As I gear up for the coming holiday season, I will be putting more of my work behind paywalls and...

Rat Boy Summer 3

That night I went over to Sigfredo's room where Wen was also staying. I saw a blue light oozing out under his door crack and I rapped softly and he opened the door the length of the chain lock that he had installed to protect himself not from Jacques but from one of the other deranged roommates at the grouphouse who had since fucked off and probably died. When he saw it was me he opened the door and ushered me inside and then closed the door quickly behind me and he said, Yeah?

Yeah, I said. I lo...
