Mel Anastasiou loves her writing life in St Albans in the UK and on Bowen Island in BC. She writes mysteries, mostly starring older sleuths who are often fish out of water and gifted amateur ‘tecs. She is senior editor, Acquisitions, with Pulp Literature, a Canadian short genre fiction quarterly.

Mel can be found dancing in her garden for joy in independent publishing, walking for miles to look at inspired Victorian architecture, and eating scones with clotted cream and jam, thus the walking.

I happily take a break from that book.Meanwhile I work on outlining, revising, polishing another story.

So, for me "writer's block" means something like "Writer gets to travel to Paris for a lovely adventure and then return to her beloved home again." (less)

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Almost 4 years back I was hanging about in a nursing home corridor, waitin…moreStella Ryman and the Thief Named Edge of the Fairmount Manor Mystery series.
Almost 4 years back I was hanging about in a nursing home corridor, waiting to help move an enormous television into an elderly acquaintance's new bedroom. I really liked the staff and the friendly women who sat in the corridor chatting, just as if it were a park. Corridor Park.

I asked myself, What if I lived here? What on earth would I do with myself? How do you wake up every morning knowing that people are responsible for you, but you are responsible for nothing but agreeable behaviour towards those around you (there seemed to be some possibilities for rebellion here). We all need a good reason for getting out of bed in the morning. What would that be?

Television? Hell no. Complaining about the food? Possibly. But Stella Ryman would have a better idea. And so she becomes... (tag line approaching)... an amateur sleuth, trapped a down-at-heel care home.(less)
