Eli K.P. William has spent his entire adult life in Japan making a career out of story and language. The only member of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of Japan who writes novels in English, he is the author of The Jubilee Cycle trilogy (Skyhorse Publishing), set in a future Tokyo. The series includes Cash Crash Jubilee (2015) and The Naked World (2017), and concluded in 2023 with the final book A Diamond Dream. He also translates Japanese literature, including the bestselling novel A Man (Crossing 2020) by Keiichiro Hirano and works as a bilingual story and writing consultant for a major Tokyo-based video game company. Crafting the descriptions took a lot of time and proceeded in several layered stages. In the first stage, I started out by wandering slowly through different areas of Tokyo while taking notes about what I was experiencing. In the second stage, I began to filter these experiences through the two central concepts of Cash Crash Jubilee. This involved asking myself the following two questions: What would happen to areas of present day Tokyo in a world where 1) all actions are intellectual properties that everyone is paying for every second and 2) where everything appears through the audiovisual digital medium of the ImmaNet?

By answering these questions, I began to have visions of a new Tokyo that never before existed and was able to access this in my mind's eye to imagine each scene. I then searched for the words to describe these scenes in the first draft and came back to these passages again and again to fine-tune the writing for each later draft.

As I worked on the novel over the course of 4 years, the image of my future Tokyo in my mind's eye gradually began to evolve, becoming clearer and more vivid. In many cases, this forced me to repeatedly rework the descriptions to match what I was "seeing". I would also occasionally stumble upon words and expressions that matched what I was "seeing" better and go back to rework the text further.(less)
