Starting again

My biggest fear as a writer was whether I would always want to be a writer.  I tend to be a bit fickle with, well, everything.  Something I like today could be abhorrent tomorrow, especially when it comes to activities.

Play the piano?  The keyboard is collecting dust in my spare bedroom.  Cross-stitching?  Half-finished rug/wall-hanging is tucked somewhere in the basement.  Making tiny hats? Read more of this blog post »

J.K. Rowling
“Whether you come back by page or by the big screen, Hogwarts will always be there to welcome you home.”
J.K. Rowling

J.K. Rowling
“No story lives unless someone wants to listen. So thank you, all of you.”
J.K. Rowling

Kurt Vonnegut Jr.
“All people are insane. They will do anything at any time, and God help anybody who looks for reasons.”
Kurt Vonnegut, Mother Night

Elmore Leonard
“Elmore Leonard's Ten Rules of Writing

1. Never open a book with weather.
2. Avoid prologues.
3. Never use a verb other than "said" to carry dialogue.
4. Never use an adverb to modify the verb "said”…he admonished gravely.
5. Keep your exclamation points under control. You are allowed no more than two or three per 100,000 words of prose.
6. Never use the words "suddenly" or "all hell broke loose."
7. Use regional dialect, patois, sparingly.
8. Avoid detailed descriptions of characters.
9. Don't go into great detail describing places and things.
10. Try to leave out the part that readers tend to skip.

My most important rule is one that sums up the 10.

If it sounds like writing, I rewrite it.”
Elmore Leonard

Marcus Tullius Cicero
“A room without books is like a body without a soul.”
Marcus Tullius Cicero
