Jez was born in London and brought up in the hills and woodlands of the rural Midlands in England. He studied languages and literature, specialising in medieval sagas and the German Romantics, before travelling & working throughout Africa and the Middle East, and then settling back in the UK.

By day he inhabits glass and steel tower blocks in the big smoke, helping people in big brands think more creatively and develop more exciting products and services, and by night he escapes to the country and transforms into an author of horror fiction. When not working and writing he runs wild and free with his mate and their pack of cubs in the Surrey Hills.

I use specific music to help me create that mind-state, and when I achieve it I can just write. I find that if I begin to write - the action of it, as it were - then after a short time I begin to write words that follow the story.

It took me some time to find the right music. I tried about ten to fifteen different modern artists, classical music and sounds (whale and bird songs, that kind of thing). It became obvious very quickly what didn’t work, in that I couldn’t write to it at all. It was distracting in itself or didn’t help me to shut down irrelevant mind-talk or external influences.

Seldom Seen Kid by Elbow has worked where other music failed.I’ve written about 140,000 words to that album on a loop!(less)

Lying awake at night sometimes, with ideas buzzing around my head, I can get really excited about putting them down onto the page. This is particularly true with characters - they have a certain sort of life in your imagination, but written down they become real.(less)
