Free book!
My husband is giving away the first book in his Zombie Apocalypse series this weekend only!
(Click the link to get the free book, it will take you to Amazon, if you don’t have their reader, don’t worry it is free to download as well! See? Win - win!)
Dead of Knight: A Zombie Apocalypse Survival Tale
You can download it for free until Sunday evening, EST about 7pm.

When zombies rise up and begin to devour the living, Ryan Knight is watching it live on his big screen TV. But that changes quickly. Zombie fiction becomes zombie reality as he struggles to keep his family safe.
Ryan’s family is spread out and they’re not prepared in the least. He’s got to get them together in one place while convincing them that the zombie threat is real. With no training and no option, Ryan and his family have to learn to trust each other and work together while trying to gather supplies and barricade the house. But, will it be enough to keep everyone safe from the zombie threat?
The Zombie Apocalypse is just outside their door and Ryan barely survives his first face to face encounter with a zombie. After that, he has only one goal: make sure everyone he loves survives. Traveling to save his mother in law, Ryan gathers needed supplies and finds other survivors. Together, they are stronger.
Now, with additional survivors and a strong desire to live, Ryan and his group fight every moment to survive. The zombie threat is everywhere and they are relentless in their pursuit of human flesh. And, they’re not the only threat…
Ryan Knight is not a Navy SEAL nor an Army Ranger. He’s just like the rest of us. And, he’s trying to keep his family safe during The Zombie Apocalypse.

New Year and New Projects
Starting work on getting The Singer up and ready!!! I am so excited to be returning to Mirabol and seeing these characters all over again. Also what is very telling is that in my personal time line of events that lead up to this story, the first entry starts this year. Which is funny to me considering I started it in 2012. So it is a sign that I get this book published this year!
Looking forward to getting my hands dirty with this project. BY THE WAY, if anyone hasn’t seen Aeon Timeline software, it is totally worth the money!! It is a life saver for my project which spans thousands of years before it even starts and about 12 years through the books. There were other things I found on line that would have work but nearly as well as this does AND it is Scrivner compatible. BONUS!
There is a 10 day trial period (10 days of actual use) that you can try. It is really cool stuff. I do suggest that you watch one of their tutorial videos otherwise I was a bit lost to start. It’s not long and once you watch it, you’ll be good to go!
I am also looking as doing some more book signings for A Fog in Charleston. I sold out of all of my books at the Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon signing and they are looking at having me come back again! Yeah! Those people are so amazing and it is such an amazing building. If you’ve never been there before, you need to check it out. It is my favorite building in Charleston.

Using Passive Voice in Creative Writing
Just a quick reference for the active and passive voice before we get started:
Active: The boy kicked the ball.
Passive: The ball was kicked by the boy.As writers, we are often encouraged, and we often encourage one another, to use the active voice when writing. We give this piece of advice because:
The passive voice can be confusing. Long sentences written in the passive voice can become jumbled and readers might have to reread a sentence to understand who did what to who. Even shorter sentences can be confusing because the passive voice is vague.
The passive voice puts the blame on the subject (the thing/person being acted upon) of the sentence. Language can be harmful and the way we use it reflects us. A mild example of this would be: “James was beaten up.” By removing those at fault for the action and removing their responsibility, we make it seem like James is at fault. Even if we do add the attackers (James was beaten up by his classmates), James is still the focus while the attackers, who are at fault, are not.
The passive voice slows down pacing. If you’re going for a fast-paced scene, use the active voice. It lets your readers know who is doing what as they go along and it cuts down sentence length. However, sometimes the passive voice can be used:
For emphasis. In the sentence “Mjölnir was lifted by Steve Rogers”, Thor’s hammer is emphasized for a good reason. Very few are able to move the hammer and, in the comics and the MCU, it’s somewhat a character of its own. Thus, the passive voice puts an emphasis on Mjölnir’s power.
For vagueness. Sometimes, for the right mood, a writer needs to use vagueness. For example, the sentence “The glasses were brought to her” put the focus on “the glasses” as an important object (as in a thing, not in the grammatical sense) and on “her” as a central character in the scene. This object and this person are who the writer wants the reader to focus on, for whatever reason. If your characters do not know who is doing the action, you can also use passive voice. If you know who is doing the action and if it’s important to know who is doing the action, use the active voice.
Microsoft Word Put a Green Line Under This Sentence: If you have “check for passive voice” enabled on Microsoft Word, it’ll probably underline sentences like “She was born”. Whether you use “Her mother gave birth to her” or “She was born” is up to you. it depends on what you need for the story. If the mother is a character or if the birth of this character is important, “Her mother gave birth to her” might be appropriate. If you’re just mentioning when a character was born, the latter could be used.
