I realiz…moreDuring my husband's 7th overseas deployment, I was home with our 4 kids and was volunteering to support the spouses and families in our unit. I realized many military spouses face similar challenges and stressful situations, but they often don't have a supportive person to turn to when they are struggling. I wanted to write a collection of inspiring letters that would work through the entire military journey--from basic training to retirement!-- so spouses could always find a friendly message of encouragement when they needed it most.
It's tradition for spouses to write "Open When" letters to their service members before a deployment, and tuck these sealed envelopes into a care package or sea bag to be opened when needed. I took this idea, but instead wrote encouraging messages from me to the military spouse reader, so it feels like a warm conversation with a friend, over coffee.
The letters had to be concise, because I was solo parenting our kids when I started the manuscript, and I had baby #5 before I finished the book! So my writing time was limited. I liked focusing on one situation or topic at a time, and pouring all the comfort I could think of into just a few pages. (less)
