Tom Patey was born in Ellon and educated at Ellon Academy, Gordon's College and Aberdeen University, where he graduated in medicine in 1955. He worked for a time on the staff of Inverurie General Hospital before joining the Navy, finally becoming a GP in Ullapool. He was internationally renowned as a climber, taking part in Alpine and Himalayan expeditions, but never lost his affection for his native hills.
