It’s just one of the best book festivals in Ellicott City, Maryland and all the proceeds go to charity. Yep! A labor of love that brings great authors, book lovers, and important charity support to the community!
This year, HallowRead will donate the net proceeds to the Maryland Book Bank and the Ellicott City Partnership for the continued resident and business recovery efforts after the devastating flash flood of 2106.

SF Benson, a Michigan native, resides in Georgia with her husband, a human daughter, and a couple of miniature fur kids (two female short-haired guinea pigs). At one time she wrangled a household which included three Samoyeds, saltwater fish, a hamster, and three guinea pigs.

SF has always wanted to be a writer, but she’s had a variety of positions ‘feeding’ her creative brain—blogger/reviewer, customer service representative, veterinary assistant, marketing assistant, editorial assistant, receptionist, and even cashier for women’s clothing and shoes.

She’s an avid bookworm who appreciates a well-written book regardless of genre. SF prefers to write stories which allow her to answer the question “what if”. She leans towards writing strong, diverse protagonists set in dystopian, science fiction, or paranormal worlds.

 

Get to know SF Benson

What kind of books did you read as a kid? I read a little of everything from Laura Ingalls Wilder to Sylvia Plath. If it sparked my interests, which constantly changed, I read it. My longest obsession was probably with witches. I read a lot of nonfiction books on the topic.

When did you decide to become an author? It wasn’t a conscious decision. I wanted to write for years, but it never happened for me. I believe it was due to writing in the wrong genre, women’s fiction. It didn’t suit me and I gave up. It wasn’t until my husband approached me after I quit my last job that I plunged forward. I was stuck in the job search, nothing was happening. He told me to pursue my dream, but do it 110 percent. No half-attempts. So I entered NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) in 2014 and completed my first rough draft.

What is your favorite thing about writing for teens? Writing for young adults is all about the possibility. There are so many things that can happen in your life depending upon what path you choose. Young adults, for the most part, make choices without restriction. New adults don’t have enough experience to challenge their choices. Everything is speculative. I love asking the ‘what if’ question, speculating the possibilities, which is what life is about for these two demographics.

What authors or books inspire you? Far too many to list, but if pressed I would start with Veronica Roth. It was her Divergent series that opened my eyes up to the genre. I’d follow up with Stacey Marie Brown who showed me the fun which could be had with paranormal fiction.

What advice do you have for teens who want to be authors? Don’t stop writing—ever! I wish someone had told me that back in the day. I know everything happens for a reason, including all the numerous jobs I’ve had, but I feel if someone had said that to me I may have finished a manuscript before 2014.

What do you want readers to take away from your book? The Alliance Chronicles is a series about fighting for what you believe in. Tru Shepard believed in her right to make her own choices in her life. She fought, and grew up in the process, for her belief. She had to step out of her own way, put aside her fears and doubts, and embrace the possibility of greatness. Sometimes we have to do things we’re uncomfortable with in order to achieve our desires.

What kind of a book is it?

Years ago I received a complimentary copy of Outlander at the Romance Writers of America conference. It had a different cover than the typical sale copy. This one featured a list.

Diana Gabaldon’s one novel fit into all of these genres.

 

After seeing this cover, I quit worrying about what genre my novel would fall into and just wrote the story I wanted to tell. My draft of Passages turned out to be: a science fiction fantasy romance with a mystery solved by an amnesiac and a psychic cyborg on an adventure that ends with a happily-ever-after.

Whew, that’s mouthful! Though the story has elements of many genres, the primary ones are science fiction and romance. This union walks the proverbial fence between hardcore science fiction advocates and lovers of the happily-ever-after: write too far to either side and the other reader group grumbles. The potential science fiction romance—or SFR—must be accessible to both.

Not sure if you’re reading or writing SFR? You’re not alone.

The Science Fiction Romance Brigade at http://sfrcontests.blogspot.com gives the following definition:

“Science Fiction Romance, within the context of this group, is any original work of fiction that contains futuristic or imaginative settings where technology (not magic) and human or alien characters are the focus (not vampires, werewolves, shapeshifters or other traditional fantasy characters).”

Following this definition is an extensive, but not exhaustive list of examples, a few of which are: alien romance, alternate history romance, military science fiction romance, space opera romance, steampunk romance, and time travel romance.

Still, I have to place my novel in a category to go upon the virtual shelf—haven’t gained Diana-level status yet! I’ve picked:

Romance –> Science Fiction

and

Science Fiction & Fantasy –> Science Fiction –> Space Opera

I hope my readers cross orbits with it!

The door opened. Out rushed a couple in the midst of an argument.

“Evard, I need more information to reassure people,” said a woman with an English accent. “Not to mention, you’re in charge, and she’ll pitch a fit if that report isn’t complete when she returns.”

A broad back encased in an orange coat blocked my view of her. The man topped me by a good half foot and spanned twice my bulk. The back began to shake with laughter.

“Ah, my fair nymph, you can’t say when that might be,” the blond man replied in a rich but strangely accented baritone. “Besides, I’m not leaving the Post, merely taking a break until that other source comes through. Let loose a bit and let me have my fun.”

“Oh, I can’t stop you, so do what you want. And don’t call me your fair nymph.”

“Aw, I try not to, but when you look like that, all in a snit, I revert to my past. Forgive me, my girl, and just remember you yourself have enjoyed many transgressions over the years. Here.” He pulled a palm-sized, leather-bound book from his side pocket. “Borrow my handbook and look them up. I shan’t be.”

The man thrust the black book at her and strode toward the center of town, leaving the girl scowling on the stoop. She stood as tall as I, about five-foot-nine, with a fit weight. A little younger than I, perhaps. Dressed in a sort of old-world outfit—a long brown skirt and vest over a long-sleeved tan blouse. Definitely a local Aardite.

She saw me and gasped. Her full pink lips opened as wide as her gray eyes, surprise evident in every creamy feature.

“I beg your pardon,” I said. “Didn’t mean to startle you, but the door opened and I didn’t want to interrupt… Sorry.”

The pretty girl released her breath, and a slight smile transformed her features. “That’s quite all right. Is there something I can help you with?” She stepped aside and gestured me in while clasping a pile of books, including the little black one.

Despite my need for medical information, I found myself not caring much about books.

One of our favorite places to hang out was the Taylor Twist ice cream parlor on Eureka Road. It was a family-friendly place with the best sundaes in town. Cindy ordered her usual brownie sundae with a scoop of mint chocolate chip ice cream and extra whipped cream. I was happy with a double scoop of Superman—blue, red, and yellow ice cream. Taylor Twist’s version came in blueberry, cherry, and banana flavors. We took our orders to one of the plain brown tables in a corner. My multi-colored ice cream melted over my fingers watching Cindy. Her tongue swirled around the spoon licking off the ice cream and whipped cream. She plunged the spoon back into the bowl. This time she stuck the whole thing in her mouth and sucked it off slowly. I gulped, wanting to trade places with the spoon.

Cindy’s pretty lips lifted into a smile. “If you planned on watching me eat, why’d you order anything?”

Her words brought me back to reality. I grabbed a stack of napkins and cleaned up the mess I made. “Yeah. Looks like you’re enjoying your ice cream.”

“Nope.”

“No?” I was confused.

“I’m enjoying the expression on your face. Want some?” Cindy held the spoon out for me. Hell, yeah. But what I wanted didn’t come on a spoon. So I lied and tried not to notice the boner her little display gave me.

“Naw. I’m good.”

“I bet you are,” she teased. Cindy closed her eyes, putting a scoop of ice cream on her tongue. Her lips opened and closed around the spoon. She gave a little moan. I didn’t know if she was doing it on purpose, but I couldn’t tear my eyes away. As her sundae disappeared, so did my resolve. If I got this wrong, I was going to die.

Jeptha, who’d been craning his head this way and that, his eyes wide with wonder, bent to the rock. “Bloody brilliant,” he whispered and reached a hand to a swollen spot on a root, one that glowed.

Old Terry slapped his hand down. “Rule number two: Do not touch the roots.” She glared at all three of them. “Do not disturb them or the soil around them. For your safety.”

Mandy: So, readers. I have a special treat for you today. Today I’m talking to Carmen and Victor, special friends to Eternity. Carmen, tell my readers how you’re related to the band.

Carmen: *leans forward timidly* Lucien is my brother.

Mandy: Correction. Lucien is your super awesome, hot as hell brother.

Mandy: Fine. Victor can keep his shirt on. It’s not like I wanted him to take it off. It’s for my readers. *whispers to Carmen* Has Lucien been there the whole time?

Carmen: *nods*

Mandy: *mumbles* Okay. We’ll do this with your shirt on, but my readers will be disappointed.

Victor: *clears throat* *turns to Carmen* Tell me why doing this interview is a good idea again?

Carmen: Uh, I don’t know. *turns to Mandy* Why are you interviewing us?

Mandy: Mostly, because my readers like to read about hot musicians and Victor definitely fits the bill.

Victor: Except, I’m not a musician.

Mandy: And why the hell not? You’re sexy, brooding and all kinds of tattooed. You have Rock Star material written all over you.

Victor: Minus the music part.

Mandy: *aghast* You don’t like music. *clasps hand to heart*

Victor: I like music just fine, I don’t play any, though. I don’t even sing.

Carmen: Well there was that one time…

Victor: Carmen!

Mandy: Yes, Carmen. Do go on. Tell me all about that time. Was there nudity? *waggles eyebrows*

Carmen: Maaaaybe. I mean not during or anything. But right before. *deep sigh* And then again after.

Mandy: Ooohhhh. Now we’re getting somewhere.

Victor: *clears throat* Uh… we are not talking about that time. *shifts uncomfortably in seat*

Mandy: Come on, V. My readers love to read about sexy times. And the things guys do to woo their women. Was their cuddling involved?

Carmen: Definitely. Victor is a fantastic cuddler.

Mandy: Awe. Isn’t that sweet.

Victor: Whoa, babe. What are you doing here?

Carmen: *turns to Victor* What? There’s nothing wrong with cuddling.

Victor: Right. PRIVATELY. When we’re alone and it’s just the two of us, I’ll cuddle with you all night if you let me. But no need to broadcast that information all over… *turns to Mandy* Where are your readers?

Kyler had tried to stay away from Mia. When he’d seen her across the club, he’d walked away and stayed away. Despite the fact that her dress made him want to unwrap her, that the updo of her lovely brown hair bared that beautiful throat, that his body was making demands of him that his brain didn’t want to answer.

And then she’d made it worse. First, by walking away from the Dom who was clearly interested in her. Second, by waiting at the bar—for him—Kyler had no doubt that’s what she’d been doing. And third by not only giving up on Kyler, but finding a possible replacement in Master Quinton.

And when Quinton had taken her hand—had touched what Kyler’s body screamed was his—Kyler hadn’t been able to stay away anymore.

No, instead, he was tying her to the cot-style bed in the basement-themed room. She was kneeling with her legs spread wide, which allowed Kyler to secure her hands and ankles behind her using rope tied to the iron. She could only lean so far forward before the rope would catch her. He tied another rope around her waist, with loops around each of her upper thighs, and attached that one to the almost equally high footboard—this rope would not only keep her from leaning back, but it would keep her from being able to sag down onto her calves. The two sets of ropes largely immobilized her so that she had to take whatever he did. After he arranged everything else he needed, he turned to her.

“What are your safewords?” he asked. She gave him the right answers. “And if you’re gagged?”

Mia shook her head three times while humming, “Mmm, mmm, mmm.”

“Very good, Mia. Are there any words or names you don’t like to be called while role-playing?”

“No, Sir,” she said, her voice so aroused that he could’ve thrown her down and skipped all the build up.

KIRA: He’s with his submissive right now. And Mia was the bomb. She’s an artistic, art gallery director with a secret desire, no need, to be dominated. But not just by anyone. Talk about disastrous meetings.

KIRA: Well maybe you should fix that. This was a fast, sexy read, which kept me turning the pages as fast as I could. I read the entire story in one sitting. Could NOT put it down.

TONI: So…what did you say his last name was?

KIRA: Heh, read the book. Not knowing last names at the BDSM club makes things interesting. Charm City is sometimes a little too small for comfort. Mia isn’t just any cop’s daughter. She’s the BCP Commissioner’s daughter and the person who holds Kyler’s professional career in his grasp. The relationship between Mia and her Dad was great though. I love that he picked up on her not being happy and tried to fix it. A million reasons for his daughter not to date a cop, yet her happiness was more important. *sniffs* Wait until you read that part. And the other Masters at Blasphemy were a trip, calling Kyler on his BS. I hope we get to meet them in subsequent books!

TONI: I smell a plot twist. I’d like to read this plot twist. And I’d like to be twisted by…*huffs* never mind. Guess I better read this book before you tell me the ending.

KIRA: The ending? Well I won’t spoil it for you (or our readers) but, UGH. The romantic in me was screaming at the top of my lungs, YES! And as Master Griffin would say, “…About f[…]ing time.”

TONI: *sticks fingers in ears* *shouts* I can’t hear you any more, I’m not listening, I can’t hear you any more.

REVIEW:

I had the joy of beta reading this story and I have to tell you, both Jason and Quinn will steal your heart.

Jason works at a LGBT shelter for kids who have been kicked out by their families, much like he had when his Rabbi father disowned him when he came out to the world. A world his family refused to be a part of anymore.

Quinn has been training his entire life to become a priest and is on sabbatical before he takes his final vows. He comes to the shelter as a carpenter while trying to make his final decision and meets Jason.

Take Jason’s perchance for falling for the wrong guys, mix in a dead sexy blonde who isn’t quite a priest yet, stir in chemistry that frankly crackles off the page and you have one hot, steamy romance.

The slow burn between these two was amazing!! The story is told from Jason’s POV with only snippets of clues about Quinn’s feelings. I loved not knowing what Quinn was thinking and feeling so that the powerful emotions guilt-tripping Jason twisted my stomach as much as the characters. The running commentary of Jason’s train of thought at times had me in stitches and at others, in tears.

Each stage of their relationship drew me deeper into these characters. From Jason’s awkward desire for unobtainable men (His comments constantly reminding himself Quinn was a priest. The rollercoster ride of Jason’s emotions was so true to life. His wanting to love Quinn, yet being afraid he was taking him away from what might be his true calling…AUGH! I loved every page-turning MOMENT.

To want what your heart tells you to never let go. But that’s exactly what Jason has to do. Let go. Let Quinn make his decision without him in a retreat of silence. A silence that could destroy Jason or give him his every desire.

Although there is an issue of religion in the story, it is not the main focus, so don’t let that stop you from picking up this heartfelt story of love. A MOMENT OF SILENCE is uplifting, heartbreaking, and all around amazing!
