After 30+ years of living abroad in Rio de Janeiro, Montreal, and Paris, David Brazzeal has spent the past several years in South Florida, where he continues to resist the idea of being “just another retired old guy.” Alongside caring for his wife on her long journey through Alzheimer’s, David has remained deeply creative — composing abstract instrumental music, experimenting with temporary labyrinth experiences in public spaces, and now turning his imagination toward fiction.
His writing often carries echoes of the places he’s called home, weaving together cultures, languages, and traditions into stories of hope and community. In addition to a handful of short stories, David has recently completed his first middle‑grade novel, The Pizza Kid

But when I need inspiration I choose from this list of activities: read a new book or leaf through an older one that I like; go to the ballet - for some reason, modern ballet inspires me like nothing else (I think it is the combination of artistic expression in one package); start journalling / morning pages again (it make take a few days but this activity really helps me sort things out, allowing ideas to rise to the surface); or take a long, solitary walk. I'm back!

Hi friends — I’ve been quiet here for a while, but I’m excited to reconnect. Over the past few years, I’ve been exploring new creative paths: composing abstract music, shaping temporary labyrinths in public spaces, and most recently, diving into fiction.

I’ve written a handful of short stories and just completed my first middle‑grade novel, The Pizza Kids. It’s been a joyful challenge to bring new Read more of this blog post »

“As a kid, I was taught that if you opened the Bible in the middle you'd probably land on the book of Psalms. And near the middle is everyone's favorite, the 23rd, there is this line: "You prepare a table before in the presence of my enemies." I don't know how many times I've read or recited this Psalm without pondering what that line actually means, but here is my take on it. When things are a bit tense, when life is not going at its best, when the potential for disaster is just around the corner, when your enemies are all around you - and even staring you down! - that's when God lays out the red-checkered picnic cloth and says, "Oooo, this is a nice place. Let's hang out here together for a while...just you and me.”

“Tragedy has a cruel way of ripping off the masks of self-sufficiency and self-satisfaction. It yells in the streets, "No! Everything is not A-okay!" It cracks apart our airtight theologies about God having everything under control. It forces us to get real and really struggle with the big questions of life. It cautions us that this life journey we are on is not easily comprehended with a few sermon points but demands a lifetime of wisdom to even begin to fathom.”

“Is there something in your spirit that keeps telling you it should be different: more interesting, more engaging, more creative, more profound? Does your prayer life feel like you're eating the same food over and over every day - mixing the same ingredients but hoping for a new, more enticing dish?”
