Darla Bartos, a former journalist turned fiction writer, developed a murder mystery trilogy set in South Africa. She and her family lived there years ago, which was only the beginning of her love affair with Africa. Darla met a group of Catholic nuns, one of whom became her lifelong friend and her daughter's Godmother. She continues to keep up with many of the nuns.

She raised five children on three continents, returned to the states to live for many years but could never forget Africa.

After the children were grown, Darla fulfilled a lifelong dream and returned to school receiving a Master's Degree in Journalism from Columbia University in 2000. Moving to Denver, Darla taught at the Metropolitan State University and began writing the first draft of what would become her fiction trilogy, MIDNIGHT IN MALAMULELE, drawing on her memories, diaries and articles she'd written while in Johannesburg. What a delight to have a reason to plan future trips back to South Africa.

Her love of Africa has taken her on many adventures allowing her to travel back and forth to visit small villages and towns, most of them depicted in MIDNIGHT IN MALAMULELE.

In 2000 as a freelancer, Darla was among the international press in Swaziland when King Mswati III attended the annual Reed Dance purportedly to pick a new bride. Darla attended the International Federation of Rangers Third World Conference at Berg-En-Dal Camp in Kruger National Park in September 2000. Waking up in a huge rondoval and stepping out to find a back yard of wild monkeys was an experience you can't put on a resume.

Never on all her trips did she observe an incident like the murders she depicts in her books, however, her interest in muti killings began while she was questioning a detective about the current situation regarding muti crimes. His answers intrigued her and ever since then, Darla has researched books, internet articles, and conversed with those who would give her factual data on the muti situation, including one South African author currently concerned with the same activity.

Many muti crimes are never reported. And many of those suspected or reported cannot be proven, leaving few convictions. It is an ongoing concern and more will come out in the next two books. The Darla Update

I could say I’ve been writing nonstop.

But that would not be the complete truth. I could say that my grandchildren have occupied a bit of my time. I suppose what you must take away from this is that it may be hitched to both of those truths. Perhaps something in between.
