I've been very fond of the idea of deluxe books for a long time, ever since I lusted over and finally bought the Red Book of Westmarch version of Lord of the Rings. And I wanted something like that for my own books.



Grandmaster is all of the short stories from the Valdemar anthologies and the Companion, in one place, that I've written or Larry has written or Larry and I have written together.

Since people have been asking for these stories, I figured we might as well crowdfund it. It's also a test shot to see if we can do deluxe editions of some of the other books.

The book has some wonderful illustrations, some by Larry, and I'm thrilled beyond belief to get an illustration from Nene Thomas, who I absolutely love. She is going to be illustrating the novella from the Companion, about Herald Tafri.

Well, in real life, everything you remember happily is a fantasy, because you only remember the good parts. That’s why we remember old boy- and girl-friends nostalgically, why when we go back to that great beach or fantastic amusement part we went to as a kid and discover it’s kind of a dump, and people think back on “Good Old Days” that, actually, probably weren’t all that “good” (especially if you are fantasizing yourself into Downton Abbey mansion).

First of all, unless your 250 pages are single, rather than double-spaced, this is not a novel. At best, it is a novella. But number of pages is essentially meaningless. What matters is word count (the number of words). Whatever word processing program you are using should have a word-count function. A novel is anything from 80k and up.
