I write the kinds of books I want to read. Fast-paced books with lots of world-building, snarky heroines, and swoony heroes. I love story, pop culture, gossip, and baked goods. I’m a modern-day hippy and certified LEGO nerd.

I live in the Austin, Texas hill country, with my geeky husband and two extremely geeky kids. We have dogs, chickens, cats, and more LEGOs than should be allowed by law. Oh, and I stress bake. So if my characters talk about food a lot, that’s why.

I know the standard answer is "working in my pajamas!"
But the actual best thing about being a writer is getting to play in a world that's not this world. Whether that world is an amazing fantasy world or just a contemporary world that is mostly like ours but you get to control the way things turn out.

There is something miraculous that happens when you let yourself be open to the story that wants to be told. It's hard to describe. But it's really, really fun.

Whew ... this is a tough one.
I used to think that writer's block was a myth. It is not.
I think there are four kinds of things that are at the root of writer's block:
The first is: writing is so hard. And rewatching Friends is easy.
The second is: you've made a misstep in plotting or the story or whatever. You're lost in the weeds and you need to backtrack and figure out where you went wrong.
The third is: the book you're writing is bringing up personal emotional stuff that you're not ready to deal with. You will absolutely have to deal with that shit before you can write the book.
The fourth is: you might be suffering from something bigger, like actual clinical depression. I feel like creativity is often the first thing to take a hit if your suffering from depression. Don't know if you're depressed? Ask your friends. They will be able to tell you.

So, long story short, if you have writer's block, you first need to figure out which kind it is. Then you can deal with it. (less)

“You just told me you didn't intend to love me. You didn't want to love me. You got yourself arrested to keep yourself away from me. That's not love. That's a compulsion. And, by the way, kudos on coming up with the worst pickup line of all time.”

Alicia Batista (Addicted Readers) WOW Emily, I didn't know that a Prequel to the Farm was in the works. I bet it's going to be AMAZING!! I'm SOOO Excited about it! Will it be giving some background information into Mel and Lily's past and how the farm came to be? Well whatever it is I know it's going to be GREAT :) Happy Writing.

Hi Alicia,
Thanks for the lovely compliment. I'm so glad you enjoyed The Farm.
And, yes, I'm working on The Lair right now. I'm going to be finishing it up this month. But, of course there'll be months of editing, etc to get it into shape. In the meantime, I'm going to be putting a prequel novella sometime this month, so watch for that! I'll be posting info on Facebook and my website when the time comes.

thanks again and happy new year!

Emily
