Never give up!
I was a poet before I started publishing my ficiton. I submitted many poems before I started getting acceptances for my collections. And the same is true for my short stories. Once I started getting acceptances from literary journals and magazines, I began working toward a collection.

With my novels, bsically, it's the same. So my advice is : KEEP WRITING! and keep submitting.(less)

Review of The Lifeline by Deborah Swift

Reading WWII fiction is only enjoyable when there’s a brilliantly-conceived plot with believable yet perilous and disconcerting events. There have to be realistic elements of danger, bravery, and most importantly, great risk for the characters. Deborah Swift’s novel, The Lifeline, is a marvelous adventure and example of historical narrative writing. The book encompasses all of the literary techniq Read more of this blog post »

“How could I say I felt uneasy for no apparent reason along the dusty road where ancient umbrella pines stretched across the shadowy path as if a handshake were being offered? I felt fear for no cause. But somehow I knew that somewhere close, peril awaited us. Looking at the arbor of trees overhead—joined limbs in prayerful attitude—I was wary, yet excited at the unknown.”
Nina Romano, Lemon Blossoms

“Ma, no—please.” “Stand tall, boy, and remember the important things of life: you’re from strong stock, you have an angel beside you, and everything in this world can be righted with love and forgiveness.” She took his face in her hands and kissed his forehead and each of his wet cheeks. “Now, go.”
Nina Romano, The Girl Who Loved Cayo Bradley

“My hand trailed in the cold water and I inhaled deeply of the sea-censed air. I licked my fingertips free of salt and observed the sun-soft dusk ignite the argentine water as it extended from sea to shore in an erupting cone of froth.”

“Love is anticipation and memory, uncertainty and longing. It’s unreasonable, of course. Nothing begins with so much excitement and hope and pleasure as love, except maybe writing a story. And nothing fails as often, except writing stories. And like a story, love must be troubled to be interesting.”

Nina Romano Nina Romano’s The Secret Language of Women is a fascinating saga that takes place at the turn of the 20th century, just as the boxer rebellion gets underway in China. This historical novel is a love story, a cross-cultural feast including recipes from a sea-faring Italian chef, Chinese herbal medicine and beautiful descriptions of China’s flora, the clash between classes and religions of the time, and the challenges faced by a strong, young, Eurasian woman attempting to determine her own fate. Romano is a poet, and her skill is evident in the imagery of the characters’ interior lives, their spiritual quests, and the every day world through which they travel. The secret language of the title is not only the language that Zhou Bin Lian, the main character records her diary in and shares with the few women who work to save her, but also a metaphor for the timeless things that women of heart share. Nina Romano is such a woman. The Secret Language of Womenis a complex, broad-reaching and memorable read.

Hargitai Fiuedu Thanks, Nina.
I'm a retired FIU prof (University Park Campus from 1990-2012, too. have a recommendation of a book that may be quite interesting for you. It's my translation Antal Szerb's "Traveler and the Moonlight." The novel is set in Italy, and it's about a 36-year-old man who escapes his wife on their honeymoon, and wanders from Umbria to Rome searching for the "gate of the dead" and obsessing about his adolescent sex games that become all too real and fatally erotic as he nears is abyss. Last year, the New York Times Review of Books designated the British version of the book "Journey by Moonlight" as a "Classic." I am stunned. The British version is offensive to women and the language could not be any more stilted. I'd love to have your take on it. Best Wishes, Peter
