Born and raised in rural England, Steve Baldwin was always excited whenever it snowed during his childhood.
As soon as he finished high school, he took the first chance that he could to live in a region where it snowed all winter long, and where the snow built up after every snowfall like he had imagined as a child.
With family links to Canada, he spends much of his time in the mountains of BC, and also the French Alps, where he has found a spiritual home in Chamonix-Mont-Blanc.

Interests: skiing, climbing, sailing, writing, snow, winter...

"Snow Tales and Powder Trails" is available both as paperback and e-book editions.

Covid corn harvest

Its February, and it already got warm and sunny here  in the Alps! With the ski-lifts closed for Covid, the only way to get shredding is human powered with skins or snowshoes for climbing. We went on a corn hunting expedition and found some great soft spring snow:

“When the full moon was out the other night, it created one of the most spectacular scenes that I have seen in the Alps. The high glaciers of the Mont Blanc range were glowing an eerie bright blue-white, and they looked like huge ghost ships in the dark ocean of sky, sailing amongst black mountain valleys.

There were no clouds, and the moon was a huge and perfect disc tracking across the sky, shining on different parts of the glaciers through the night.

Looking up, I saw the black silhouette of the mid-altitude mountains below the ethereal shining high-mountain terrain, which created a weird vision: the ghostly glaciers floating, and appearing separate, contrasting sharply with the dark valleys beneath.

The Aiguille Verte especially, being so steep and isolated, seemed almost like a holographic mast with sails, plowing into the rolling waves, chasing after the Mont Blanc summit with its billowing spinnaker...”

“...Following the bird you lay into a deep turn in the steepening descent. It [the snow] is super soft, bottomless and amazingly light, yet supportive. It feels like something in between floating on top, and within the top of a deep-pile carpet as you link turn after turn down the open glacier. Each side of you are fellow riders, though not too close, whooping with exhilaration and flying down, down towards the valley below. The pitch gets steeper and the slope widens out, with seemingly endless space to the sides and an untracked oblivion ahead and beneath you. Each turn is delicious softness; you can almost feel every snow crystal reacting with the base of your skis. Those skis feel like extensions of your feet, and you connect with the mountain through a portal link created by the snowpack, as the spray from the turn hangs in the air behind you...”
