God Can Bring Beauty from the Ashes: Finding Hope When Life Falls Apart
There are seasons in life that leave us asking questions we never thought we’d have to ask.
Why did this happen?
Why didn’t God stop it?
Will things ever be the same again?
Whether it’s a broken relationship, a devastating diagnosis, the loss of someone we love, or simply the weight of disappointment, most of us eventually find ourselves standing in the ashes of plans that didn’t work out the way we hoped.
The encouraging truth is this:
God has never been intimidated by ashes.
Throughout Scripture, He repeatedly demonstrates His ability to restore what appears beyond repair.
“And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.”
Romans 8:28 (NKJV)
Notice what Paul doesn’t say.
He doesn’t tell us that every circumstance is good.
He tells us that God is able to work through every circumstance for our good. That distinction changes everything.
Sometimes the Hardest Fires Aren’t the Ones We Can See
When we hear the word fire, we often picture flames consuming buildings or forests.
But many of life’s deepest fires are invisible.
They’re the arguments that slowly erode a marriage.
The fear that keeps us awake at night.
The guilt over mistakes we can’t undo.
The disappointment that lingers after prayers seem to go unanswered.
These are the fires that quietly test our faith.
It’s often in those moments that we’re tempted to believe God has forgotten us.
Yet Scripture paints a different picture.
Throughout the Bible, God consistently meets His people in difficult places—not after the trial is over, but while they’re walking through it.
God Often Does His Greatest Work in Difficult SeasonsOne of the hardest lessons to learn is that God isn’t always trying to remove us from hardship immediately.
Sometimes He’s using hardship to shape us.
James writes:
“My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience.”
James 1:2–3 (NKJV)
That doesn’t mean trials are enjoyable.
It means they can become meaningful.
Looking back over our lives, many of us can identify moments we never would have chosen—but also moments that strengthened our faith in ways comfort never could.
God doesn’t waste pain.
Forgiveness Is Often the Beginning of HealingOne of the most difficult things God asks us to do is forgive.
Not because the offense was small.
Not because justice doesn’t matter.
But because bitterness slowly burns the person holding it.
Forgiveness doesn’t erase consequences.
It doesn’t pretend nothing happened.
Instead, it releases our desire to carry the burden alone and entrusts justice to God.
Healing often begins long before circumstances change.
It begins when our hearts begin to surrender.
Why I Wrote Amongst The Flames
Buy NowThe ideas in this article inspired one of my novels, Amongst The Flames.
Cole Taylor is a firefighter who has spent years rescuing strangers from burning buildings.
But after a devastating injury, he discovers that the greatest battle isn’t physical—it’s fighting for his family, rebuilding trust, and learning what sacrificial love truly looks like.
The story explores questions many of us wrestle with:
Can broken marriages really heal? What does biblical forgiveness look like? Can God restore relationships after deep hurt?Is hope possible after loss? While the characters are fictional, the truths they’re learning come directly from Scripture.
If you’ve ever wondered whether God can redeem what’s been broken in your own life, I hope this story encourages you.

Maybe you’re walking through a difficult season today.
Maybe the future feels uncertain.
Maybe you’re carrying grief, disappointment, or wounds no one else can see.
Please remember this:
Your story isn’t finished.
God is still writing it.
The ashes you’re standing in today may become the testimony you share tomorrow.
As Isaiah reminds us, God gives His people:
“…beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning…”
Isaiah 61:3 (NKJV)
Hold onto that promise.
The God who restores broken hearts still restores them today.
I’d Love to Hear From YouHave you ever experienced God bringing hope out of one of life’s hardest seasons?

What Sharing the Gospel Drunk Taught Me About Genesis 20
“You shared the Gospel while you were drunk and she laughed at you. What did you expect?”
These words echo through my thoughts with a dread my soul cannot bear. “Here I am, Lord,” I called out and call out over and over again, weeping as I plea for the Lord to use me and my life. To only end up sharing His good news while intoxicated. What kind of servant am I?
In my reading today, I read about Abraham and when his wife did some traveling. I wanted to share some observations that were on my heart as I wrestle with my own sin and wrongdoing.
And Abraham journeyed from there to the South, and dwelt between Kadesh and Shur, and stayed in Gerar.
Genesis 20:1
The first observation that stood out to me is the fact he is referred to as Abraham, not his previous name Abram. This wrongdoing that Abraham was about to do wasn’t in his early years of life, it wasn’t before the blessing came, it was afterwards.
To me this illustrates that God, in His infinite knowledge of all things that were, are, and will come, still chose to bless Abraham and his family. It also illuminates the chilling reality that even when we belong to God, we don’t always make the wisest of choices.
Another observation made here in this first verse is the fact there is no clear indication that God told Abraham to take this journey. How often do we take steps forward without instruction from God? Without consulting Him before moving in a particular direction? But what is God’s response? Does he let his servant die? No. God doesn’t abandon Abraham despite his choice to go where he wasn’t instructed.
Now Abraham said of Sarah his wife, “She is my sister.” And Abimelech king of Gerar sent and took Sarah.
Genesis 20:2
In this verse I see myself so strongly as Abraham doubles down on making his own decisions without consulting God. He already ventured out of the land he was commanded to be in and now he’s lying about who his wife is… why? Because of the fear of men.
Every decision we make is like that of an apple seed being planted in the ground. It’s never the end of the matter, for that seed with grow into a tree and produce fruit. We will reap what we sow (Galatians 6:7). I did it by drinking while trying to share the Gospel and many other ways both good and bad and Abraham did here by making the decision to wander outside of God’s command and then choosing to lie about his wife. It not only continues in this story but generations when his son Isaac repeats the exact same sin in Genesis 26.
The lesson that presses in on my heart here is the fact we must be careful about the decisions we make and we must consult God and let Him guide us in all that we do.
But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night, and said to him, “Indeed you are a dead man because of the woman whom you have taken, for she is a man’s wife.”
Genesis 20:3
Despite Abraham’s bad choices, God shows up and intervenes. It reminds me of being a young boy and my dad always being there for me even when I didn’t deserve his kindness. God’s mercy, grace, and love moves into situations often without our knowing.
Abraham had no idea that Abimelech was having this dream, he had no clue how he was going to get out of this sticky situation and God was doing work on the backend. The passage doesn’t describe the length of time that had transpired and I think that’s important to note.
Often, when we encounter difficulty in this life, we turn our minds toward Heaven and ask God to intervene. We beg, we plead, we hope… Have you been in a situation where you didn’t do the right thing and you’re still hoping God shows up?
That hits different.
While on one level, a person would think that a person who did the wrong thing doesn’t deserve God’s intervention, God’s kindness… God’s rescue. But you know what the truth is? We don’t deserve it even when we do the right thing. God’s mercy and grace wouldn’t be mercy and grace if we deserved it.
It’s my deep conviction that it’s in those moments of prayer where we know we don’t deserve it, we know we’re not good, we know that God has no reason to show us grace and mercy that we have a closer and truer look into ourselves than any other time. For when we are at the mercy of God and know it fully with every fiber of our being, is when we are living in the Matthew 5:3 ‘Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.’
We should strive to always be in this state of being, but it can be difficult. For it means acknowledging our slip-ups, our sins, our wrongs. It means us looking at ourselves in a true way, not lesser, but less than God. We should not medicate ourselves with the world to numb the pain of our sins, but instead repent and then let God use them to humble us, to bring us low so that He may lift us up.
And Abimelech called Abraham and said to him, “What have you done to us? How have I offended you, that you have brought on me and on my kingdom a great sin? You have done deeds to me that ought not to be done. Then Abimelech said to Abraham, “What did you have in view, that you have done this thing?”
Genesis 20:9-10
My heart breaks over the impact of our sins on the testimony we have for God. Here we see the fallout for Abraham as Abimelech shares his hurt and the injustices done upon him. In a moment of fear, Abraham made a decision to lie and in turn caused great distress to come upon Abimelech. How often does this happen in our own lives? One decision rooted in fear that has rippling consequences to those all around us. My heart feels the weight as I think about those moments and how many of them slip by without even so much as a thought on my part unless someone comes and speaks to me directly about it.
At the end of the passage, Abimelech confronts Abraham directly and asks him pointedly for a reason, for a response to why he chose what he chose to do.
We often have these moments in life with people, especially with those closest to us. When we’ve hurt them and they come to us wanting to know why. It’s in these moments we either pause and ask God, or continue down the road of self-justification.
The temptation is to explain it away, to show the evidence of our point of view. Whatever decision you and I make in these critical moments, we must pause to pray and to challenge ourselves. We must ask not whether or not what we thought was true to ourselves, but instead, was this decision guided by God or by myself?
And Abraham said, “Because I thought, surely the fear of God is not in this place; and they will kill me on account of my wife. But indeed she is truly my sister. She is the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother; and she became my wife. And it came to pass, when God caused me to wander from my father’s house, that I said to her, ‘This is your kindness that you should do for me: in every place, wherever we go, say of me, “He is my brother.” ’ ”
Genesis 20:11-13
I’m what most would call a thinker. I like to think through situations and decisions before they happen in order to take the best course of action. This can be good, but it can be dangerous when we don’t take into account God. When we don’t consult Him, when we don’t let His Word and His instructions guide the path ahead. The passage above reveals the heart of Abraham. He was thinking his way through the situation and making judgments based on what he thought instead of what God said.
We will always find a way to justify our actions and behaviors.
The story here in Genesis wraps up with Abimelech giving a bunch of animals, servants, and cash to the family. There was no talk of Abimelech glorifying God or becoming a follower of God, but instead seems to just be trying to fix a bad situation he found himself in.
God was present, even in Abraham’s bad decisions, I think that’s important to keep in mind. He doesn’t abandon us when we do stupid, often He’s working in the background and keeping us from getting killed.
We don’t know how Abimelech would’ve responded if Abraham had been honest in the situation upon his arrival, then again, I don’t think Abraham would’ve even been at that location had he been following the Lord’s instruction. Regardless, we know that God would’ve protected Abraham.
Oftentimes we can end up going the wrong direction for a long way and it’s not because we don’t love God or care about His leading in our life, but instead because we think we have things figured out, we have things handled.
That night I drank and shared the Gospel? It was one night of many at the time. And guess what? I thought I had things figured out, I thought I was doing a good thing by sharing the love and hope that exists in Christ alone. The truth is… I was a long way from God’s will for my life and I had justified every action and decision along the way. God showed up for me in my sin as well. Those weekly drinks became a distant memory as God shifted me away from the area and into new life.
The takeaway lesson here is simple—Consult God, acknowledge and repent of your sin and don’t take things into your own hands or you’ll just make stupid decisions.

New Christian Fiction Romance Novel
There’s something sacred about the ocean—it’s a place where the soul can breathe, where God’s presence feels as close as the tide lapping at your feet. That’s the heartbeat behind Waves of Endless Love, a new Christian fiction story that’s been bubbling up in my spirit for months, waiting for the right moment to spill onto the page. Today, I’m excited to share it with you—a tale born from the beauty of the coast and the quiet promises of God’s love.
I’ve always found the ocean to be a teacher in its own right. It’s wild and untamed, yet there’s a gentleness to its persistence. It reminds me of how God works in our lives—sometimes with a roar, sometimes with a whisper, but always with purpose.
As I wrote this book, I imagined readers standing on their own shores in life, whatever that might look like—maybe a literal beach, maybe a metaphorical one—and feeling that same call to pause, to listen, to hope again.
Waves of Endless Love isn’t just a story… it’s an invitation to step into a space where faith can be your guide.
A Story of Healing and Second ChancesAt the heart of Waves of Endless Love are two characters who feel achingly real to me: Samantha and Chase.
Samantha is a woman running on empty. Life in Orlando has worn her down—broken relationships, unmet dreams, and a quiet ache she can’t quite name. When it all becomes too much, she packs her bags and heads to Emerald Isle, seeking refuge at her sister Janet’s home. The coastal town welcomes her with golden sunsets that paint the sky in hues of amber and rose, and the endless song of the waves begins to untangle the knots in her soul. But healing isn’t instantaneous. It’s a slow unraveling, and just as Samantha starts to find her footing, Chase enters the scene.
Chase is a man shaped by both loss and longing. A letter from an old friend serving overseas has stirred up memories he’d rather keep buried, pulling him back to his family’s beach house in Emerald Isle. He’s steady and kind, with a quiet strength that draws people in, but beneath it all, he’s grappling with his own questions: What’s next? Where does he belong? The creak of the porch steps and the scent of salt air bring him back to simpler days, but they also force him to face the parts of his life he’s left unresolved. When his path crosses Samantha’s, it’s unexpected—a collision of two weary hearts in a place neither planned to be.

This Christian romance unfolds against the backdrop of Emerald Isle, a setting that’s as much a character as Samantha and Chase themselves. The ocean becomes a mirror for their struggles and a canvas for their redemption. Samantha finds herself drawn to the water’s edge, where the tide erases her footprints in the sand—a symbol of the fresh start she craves.
Chase, meanwhile, rediscovers pieces of himself in the rhythm of coastal life, from the gulls crying overhead to the way the moonlight dances on the waves. Their journeys weave together in ways that feel both tender and true, revealing how God often uses the unexpected—people, places, moments—to bring us back to Him.
What I loved most about writing Waves of Endless Love is how it reflects the messiness of real life. Samantha wrestles with guilt over choices she can’t undo, while Chase battles the fear that he’s missed his chance at something meaningful. Yet, through it all, there’s this undercurrent of grace.
Psalm 103:12 echoes in my mind as I think of them: “As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.” That’s the promise they’re learning to claim, and it’s the heartbeat of this Christian fiction tale.
It’s a story about second chances, about trusting God to take the broken strands of our lives and weave them into something beautiful. And isn’t that what we all long for—to believe that our past doesn’t define us, that God’s love is big enough to make us new?
Finding Hope in Unexpected PlacesIf you’ve ever felt like hope is slipping through your fingers, this book is for you. It’s for the days when you wonder if you’re too far gone, if healing is just a dream. Samantha and Chase show us that it’s not—because God’s love doesn’t give up. It pursues us, surrounds us, lifts us when we can’t stand on our own. That’s the beauty of Christian fiction: it tells stories that point us back to Him, over and over again.
Embrace the Journey: Your Invitation to Read and ReflectI’m so excited to invite you into the world of Waves of Endless Love. It’s available now on Amazon (link), and I truly believe it’s a story that will resonate with your heart. But I get it—life can be heavy, and sometimes even picking up a book feels like a stretch. If you’re in that place, please reach out to me at tk@tkchapin.com. I’d love to send you a virtual copy, no strings attached. We all need a little light sometimes, and it would mean the world to me to share this with you, wherever you’re at.
To make the experience even richer, I’ve created something extra: the Trust 30 Day Companion devotional guide (link). Trust is the thread that ties Waves of Endless Love together—trusting God when the future’s foggy, trusting someone new when your heart’s been hurt. This devotional is a gentle companion, offering a daily reflection, a Scripture, and a prayer to guide you through the story or your own season of life. It’s about leaning into God’s faithfulness, one day at a time.
Here’s how you might use it: as you read a chapter of the book, sit with the day’s devotional afterward. Let the words sink in over a cup of coffee or during a quiet moment by the window. Maybe journal your thoughts or whisper the prayer aloud. It’s like having a friend along for the journey, nudging you toward God’s promises. You can grab the devotional at Amazon (link), and I’d be thrilled for you to give it a try. Pairing this Christian romance with the devotional feels like a double dose of encouragement—something we could all use more of, right?
God’s Endless Love: A Final ThoughtAs you dive into Waves of Endless Love, my deepest prayer is that you’ll feel God’s love wrapping around you like the tide—constant, warm, and unshakable. I’ve been clinging to Jeremiah 29:11 lately: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” It’s a verse that Samantha and Chase wrestle with in their own ways, and it’s one I hope you’ll carry too. No matter what’s behind you or what’s ahead, God’s got a story for you—a good one, full of hope.
The ocean has a way of teaching us that truth. Its waves never stop coming, no matter how stormy the night or how still the morning. God’s love is like that—endless, returning, renewing. So wherever you are today, whether you’re standing strong or barely holding on, know this: you’re not alone. Your story matters, and God’s not finished writing it yet.
Thanks for being here, for letting me share this piece of my heart with you. I’d love to hear your thoughts on Waves of Endless Love—drop a comment below or send me a note anytime. You’re part of this journey too, and I’m so grateful to have you along.

When the World Misses the Light: A Faith That Hurts
“The world cannot comprehend the light because they live in the darkness.” He came closer and shook his head. “It’s one of the sad parts of this entire faith journey, Ethan. To have a stirring so strong, a belief rooted in reality and in truth, and yet be surrounded by a sea of people who rather live apart from God not just in this life but for all eternity.” Excerpt from “Shores of Redemption” (novel set to release in April 2025)
This little chunk from Shores of Redemption hits me square in the chest every time I read it. It’s not just words on a page—it’s a mirror to something I’ve felt deep down for years.
There’s this ache, you know? Not the loud kind that comes with trials or the world throwing punches—those I can handle. This is quieter, heavier. It’s the sting of walking with a faith so real it’s like breathing, while all around me, folks I love are content to stumble in the dark. And not just now—for forever. That’s the part that gets me.
Seeing What They Don’tFaith is a funny thing. It’s this fire in your gut, a certainty that God’s real and His truth holds everything together. You feel it, live it, cling to it when the storms hit. But then you look out, and it’s like you’re the only one who sees the sunrise.
Everyone else?
They’re shuffling along in a fog, not because they’re bad, but because the dark’s familiar. Safe, even.
“The world cannot comprehend the light”—man, that’s it. It’s not that they hate it . . . they just don’t get it.
And trying to explain it? It’s like describing color to someone who’s never opened their eyes.
I’ve been there, standing in that gap.
Maybe you have as well.
You want to grab people—friends, family, the guy at the gas station—and say, “Look! There’s more than this!” But they shrug, or smile, or just say something like, “That’s what works for you.” It’s not rejection that stings most—it’s the indifference. The choosing to stay lost when the way out’s right there.
God’s Heart, My HeartHere’s where it cuts deepest: “apart from God not just in this life but for all eternity.”
That’s not just a throwaway line—it’s a gut punch.
If it tears me up to see people I care about miss out on God’s goodness, how much more does it wreck Him?
Oof.
I think about Jesus, looking over Jerusalem with tears in His eyes, or that father pacing the porch for his runaway kid.
God’s not up there shaking His head in anger.
He’s hurting. He’s brokenhearted.
He wants them home.
And I feel that, too, in my own small way. It’s not about being holier-than-thou; it’s about loving people enough to hate what they’re missing out on not only in this life, but the next.
Sometimes I wonder if that’s the real weight of faith—not the battles we fight outward, but the ones we carry inside.
You’ve got this truth, this light, and it’s everything. But it comes with a cost: seeing what could be for people and knowing they might never grab it.
The Hard Road of BelievingThe character in my story nails it—“one of the sad parts of this entire faith journey.”
Yeah, it is.
Faith isn’t all mountaintop moments and victory laps. It’s gritty. It’s holding onto what’s real when the world’s busy chasing shadows.
Persecution? Doubts? I can take those in stride.
But watching people I’d die for settle for less than God’s best—and not just for today, but forever—that’s the stuff that keeps me up at night.
Still, there’s a flip side.
That “stirring so strong,” that belief grounded in truth—it’s not just a burden.
It’s my anchor.
It’s what keeps me steady when the sea of shrugs threatens to knock me over. I’m not better than anyone—God knows I’m a mess half the time—but I’ve got something worth holding onto.
And maybe that’s why the heartbreak doesn’t break me? It’s just part of the deal.
Why It Sticks With MeSo why does this passage stick like glue in my hair?
Because it puts words to something I’ve lived.
It’s the tension of knowing God’s light while living in a world that’s fine without ever seeing it or experiencing it.
It’s the pain of wanting everyone to see what I see, feel what I feel, and knowing the majority will never experience it.
It’s the echo of God’s own heart, beating for people who don’t even hear it.
That breaks me—but it also fuels me.
This faith thing? It’s not about winning or proving a point. It’s about showing up, day after day, with a light that doesn’t dim.
Even when it’s heavy.
Even when it hurts.
Because some people will wake up to the light and to the truth of God’s love, His goodness.

Among these, one of my fan favorite novels, “A Life Hanging By Threads,” stands out as a compelling Christian fiction love story that delves deep into the trials and triumphs of a struggling marriage. Just check out the reviews!
The Appeal of Second Chance at Love NovelsSecond chance at love novels resonate with readers because they reflect real-life experiences of overcoming obstacles and finding hope in the midst of hardship or difficulties. These stories are not just about falling in love again but also about healing, forgiveness, and the enduring power of love in our lives. They remind us that it’s possible to not only rebuild but also to strengthen relationships even after significant challenges.
As each of us navigate our own lives, we often encounter moments of doubt and hardship, especially in our relationships. We can feel alone, and these kinds of stories remind us that we’re not. A second chance at love novel provides a comforting reminder to the reader that no matter how broken we feel, there is always hope for renewal and transformation. These love stories show us that love can be rekindled, trust can be rebuilt, and hearts can be healed.
A Love Story That Touches the Heart“A Life Hanging By Threads” is a love story I wrote that exemplifies the beauty and complexity of second chance romance. This novel follows the journey of April and Justin Bybee, a married couple whose once-strong marriage is now on the brink of collapse. April, a devoted Christian wife, and loving mother, turns to more consistent prayer for guidance and strength. However, the pressures of Justin’s demanding job and his increasing absence have strained their relationship to its breaking point.

April’s character is deeply relatable to anyone who has faced struggles as a wife in their marriage. She is a woman of faith, constantly seeking God’s wisdom and guidance. Her love for her husband Justin and her dedication to her family are unwavering, even as she grapples with feelings of loneliness and despair. The depiction of her inner turmoil and her reliance on prayer is a powerful reminder of the strength that comes from faith and trusting God through the difficult times.
The Power of a Praying WifeOne of the central themes in “A Life Hanging By Threads” is the power of a praying wife. April’s unwavering faith and dedication to prayer highlight the importance of seeking God’s guidance in times of trouble. Her prayers for her marriage and for Justin are heartfelt and earnest, showcasing the depth of her love and her trust in God’s plan.
The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.
James 5:16, ESV
April’s journey is a testament to the transformative power of prayer. She believes in the power of intercession, trusting that God hears her cries and will respond in His perfect timing. This theme is a beautiful reminder to readers that no matter how dire the situation may seem, prayer can bring about miraculous changes when God answers them.
Trusting God in Difficult TimesAs Justin faces yet another promotion at work, April’s fears of further neglect and disconnection grow. The novel explores what it means to trust God when your marriage is struggling. It’s a poignant reminder that even in the darkest moments, God’s presence can bring peace, warmth, and love. April’s faith journey is both inspiring and relatable, encouraging readers to lean on their faith in God during their own trials.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
Proverbs 3:5-6, ESV
Trusting God in difficult times is not always easy, no matter the strength of faith a person has inside of them. It requires a deep sense of surrender and a willingness to let go of our fears and anxieties and trust God is holding our future and has a plan for how it all works out. April’s story encourages readers to place their trust in God, even when the future seems uncertain. Her journey is a powerful reminder that God’s plans are always for our good, even when we can’t see the bigger picture that He can.
An Inspiring Christian Romance“A Life Hanging By Threads” is more than just a love story book; it’s an inspiring Christian romance that offers Scriptural truth and the Gospel at the forefront. I have woven Biblical principles into the narrative, providing a powerful message of hope and redemption. The story emphasizes the importance of communication, forgiveness, and unwavering faith in the journey toward healing a broken relationship between a husband and a wife.
For readers who enjoy Christian fiction, this novel provides a rich tapestry of faith-based lessons and encouragement that will touch your heart. It reminds us that true love is rooted in Christ and that through Him, all things are possible. The themes of grace, forgiveness, and redemption are beautifully illustrated, making this a must-read for anyone seeking spiritual growth and inspiration while reading a great love story.
Good Romance Books to ReadFor those searching for good romance books to read, “A Life Hanging By Threads” is a must-read novel. Its unique blend of Christian faith and second chance romance sets it apart from typical love stories, even Christian ones. Readers will find themselves drawn into April and Justin’s world, rooting for their reconciliation and growth.
The novel not only offers a compelling love story but also provides valuable insights into the challenges and rewards of maintaining a Christ-centered marriage. It encourages readers to reflect on their own relationships and consider how faith can play a pivotal role in overcoming obstacles and nurturing love with their own four walls.
The Journey of RenewalThe novel takes readers on an emotional journey as April and Justin navigate the complexities of their relationship in marriage. The characters are well-developed, and their struggles are portrayed with authenticity and sensitivity to the topics covered. As April’s faith is stretched and tested in ways she never imagined, readers are reminded of the importance of perseverance and trust in God’s timing.
We rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope.
Romans 5:3-4, ESV
April’s journey is a powerful illustration of how trials can strengthen our faith and character as we go through them. Through her perseverance, readers are encouraged to remain steadfast in their own struggles, trusting that God is working behind the scenes to bring about His perfect will and our own good.
Biblical Encouragement for Struggling MarriagesThroughout the story, I have incorporated Biblical encouragement, offering readers a source of strength and inspiration. These verses are woven seamlessly into the narrative, providing readers with spiritual nourishment and hope as they read real-to-life characters on the pages. The Scripture woven in serves as a reminder that God’s Word is a powerful source of comfort and guidance, especially during times of difficulty.
A Story of Grace and Redemption“A Life Hanging By Threads” is ultimately a story of grace and redemption. It’s about finding hope and healing in the midst of the worst life has to offer. The novel beautifully illustrates that even when a relationship seems beyond repair, God’s grace can bring restoration and new beginnings. April and Justin’s journey is a testament to the transformative power of love and faith.
For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.
Jeremiah 29:11, ESV
The theme of redemption is a central element of the second chance romance novel, reminding readers that no situation is beyond God’s ability to restore. April and Justin’s story is a powerful testament to the fact that God’s grace is sufficient to heal even the deepest wounds and bring about new life.

God Loves A Broken Heart | How To Find Healing
In our lives, even as Christians, we often encounter moments of deep pain and brokenness. This could be losing a loved one, or it could be plans not turning out to be what we expected. Or maybe a medical diagnosis. Regardless of what the moment consists of, we can feel overwhelmed, but the Bible assures us that God loves a broken heart, a comforting reminder of how much God loves us. This powerful truth offers hope and comfort to those who are struggling as their heart is broken or breaking. By understanding how God’s love for a broken heart is woven throughout Scripture, we can find the healing we need and come as we draw closer to Him.
Understanding BrokennessBrokenness is a common human experience that we all share if we end up living for any length of time. This broken state can result from various sources: loss, betrayal, sin, or the pressures of life and work. In these difficult times, it’s easy to feel isolated and a sense of being forgotten by God. However, the Bible reveals to us that God is close to those who are brokenhearted. Take a look at this passage in Psalms.
The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.
Psalm 34:18
What a beautiful verse with a promise! It reassures us that God’s presence is with us in our darkest moments. He never abandons us in our pain; instead, He draws near to offer His comfort and salvation.
Personally, I felt this most in my life when I lost my father suddenly. I recall being in shock until I returned home and to work. In the early mornings days and weeks following the loss, I recall my heart breaking repeatedly and crying out to God alone in my living room. His love surrounded me, warming my soul and comforting me when I needed it most. It was the most profound presence of God I have ever felt in my life.
God’s Compassion for the BrokenheartedThroughout Scripture, we see God’s compassion for those who are in pain and hurting. Jesus Himself demonstrated this kind of compassion throughout the entirety of His earthly ministry. Jesus sought after and reached out to those who were marginalized, sick, and struggling with sin. His actions and His words reflected the true heart of God, displaying love and mercy to the brokenhearted.
The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound.
Isaiah 61:1
Jesus fulfilled this prophecy, bringing hope and healing to a hurting world.
The Purpose of Brokenness in Our LivesIn His infinite wisdom and sovereignty, God often uses our brokenness for a greater purpose than we can imagine. While it may be difficult to understand and grasp this reality, especially in the midst of our pain, brokenness can lead us to a deeper reliance on God. It strips away our self-sufficiency, revealing to us we aren’t self-sufficient. It brings us to our knees, and to a place where we recognize our great need for Him.
But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
2 Corinthians 12:9-10
These verses highlight a paradox of Christian faith and a fundamental truth: in our weakness, God’s strength is made perfect. Our brokenness is not caused by God but used by Him to display His power and grace in our lives. It is only when we can acknowledge our weakness that we can experience the fullness of His love and strength in our lives.
God’s Healing for a Broken HeartGod’s love for a broken heart is not just comfort in a single moment; it’s also about healing from the pain. He desires to restore us fully and make us whole once again. This process of healing often begins with us surrendering. We must surrender our pain, hurt, and brokenness to God and trust Him to mend our hearts.
He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.
Psalm 147:3
In the business of healing, God desires to bring healing to each of our broken hearts. He takes our shattered hearts and, with His tender and loving touch, brings restoration and wholeness to those who seek Him. His healing may come through prayer, Scripture, time or community but it is always rooted in His deep and unyielding love for each one of us.
Practical Steps to Embrace God’s Love In Brokenness1. Turn to Scripture:The Bible is full of promises and examples of God’s love and faithfulness throughout the generations. Regularly reading and meditating on God’s Word provides comfort and strength to our souls. Verses like Psalm 34:18 and Isaiah 61:1 remind us of God’s closeness and His healing power present in our daily lives.
2. Pray Honestly:Prayer is an incredible and powerful tool in the process of healing. Pour out your heart to God in genuineness, sharing your pain and struggles you encounter no matter the size. He listens and cares deeply about you and your broken heart.
3. Seek Community:
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:6-7
God often uses other people in our lives to bring healing. Surround yourself with a supportive Christian community that will pray with you, offer encouragement, and walk alongside you in your pain, difficulty, and life’s journey.
4. Worship and Praise:
Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.
Galatians 6:2
Even in our state of brokenness, worship can shift our focus from the pain we hold in our hearts and onto God’s greatness. Singing praises and worshiping God can seem difficult when broken, but it brings peace and serves as a reminder to us of His sovereignty and love.
5. Rest in God’s Presence:
Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God.
Psalm 42:11
It’s important that you spend time in quiet reflection, resting in God’s presence. Having this time allows Him to speak to your heart and minister to your soul, helping bring healing and peace.
Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
Matthew 11:28-30
Embracing God’s Plan for Our LivesFully understanding the why when it comes to experiencing certain trials and brokenness may never happen on this side of eternity, but we can trust that God has a plan and purpose for our lives. His love for us is unwavering and never-ending, even in our darkest moments we face. By embracing His love and seeking His presence daily, we can find hope and the healing we desperately crave.
And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.
Romans 8:28
This verse promises us that God can and does bring good out of our pain and out of our brokenness, using it for His glory and our spiritual growth.
Testimonies of God’s LoveThroughout human history, countless people have experienced the power of God’s love and His healing in their brokenness. Their testimonies serve as powerful reminders of His goodness, faithfulness and compassion for His children. Reflecting on these stories can encourage and inspire us in our own journeys.
One such example is the story of King David in the Bible. Despite his many failures and moments of brokenness, David was known as a man after God’s own heart. His psalms are amazing and filled with the emotional experiences he went through as a person. Raw expressions of pain and repentance, but he also speaks throughout them of God’s goodness and love.
The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.
Psalm 51:17
Conclusion
Understanding that God loves a broken heart transforms our perspective on our pain and suffering. We are reminded that we are not alone, that God is with us in the valleys we go through, and that He has a purpose for our trials. By turning our focus and our hearts toward Scripture, praying honestly, seeking community, worshiping, and resting in God’s presence, we can find the healing and hope we need.
God’s love is the ultimate remedy for a broken heart no matter what age or gender. It is through His love that we are able to find restoration, strength, and the courage to move forward. No matter the depth of our pain, heartache, and brokenness, we can trust in God’s unfailing love and His promise to heal and renew us from the inside out.
He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.
Psalm 147:3
Let me leave you with this truth. Anchor yourself in God and allow His Holy Spirit to guide you toward the loving embrace of our Heavenly Father, who is always near and ready to heal your broken heart.

Sample of “In His Love”
CHAPTER 1IN THE GLOW OF THE streetlight, I stood outside Mrs. Wilcox’s house, Billy’s mother. Checking the address once more on the slip of paper, I slid it back into my binder along with my notes about Billy’s successful YouTube channel and his suicide. Taking one last deep breath, I walked up the path and toward the front door. Breathing out with each step I took, I tried to settle my nerves. No part of me wanted to be here. No part of me wanted to meet the woman who was most likely responsible for driving her kid to his untimely death.
Knock, knock, knock.
Relaxing on my heels, I adjusted my binder underneath my arm and tried to mentally prepare for dealing with a woman who clung to her God more than her love for a son. My mind drifted like a wave lost at sea, recalling the fact that my own mother didn’t want me.
The door creaked, opening only a fraction but enough to break me out of my thoughts. A glimpse of whom I presumed to be Mrs. Wilcox came into view. She had dark brown hair, curly and with threads of gray woven in. The warmth of her brown eyes found mine. With a guarded but soft tone, she asked, “Are you a reporter?”
“Yes, ma’am. I am, but I’m doing a piece on Billy that will memorialize him.”
“What’s your favorite smell?” she asked.
Taken aback by the question, I didn’t know what to say. It wasn’t every day that I was asked questions. That was my job. I laughed a little, loosening the tension that had me wound up like a child’s toy. “Um . . . Okay. I guess the smell of rain on a hot day?”
I don’t know if it was my answer or not, but she opened the door the next moment and invited me inside.
As I walked in through the doorway, I immediately caught sight of a Bible verse inside a picture frame that hung above the couch on the wall.
“But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.”
Joshua 24:15
Uneasiness returned to me as I thought about Billy. Taking a seat on the sofa, I wasted no time. “My name’s John Quinby and I work for The Globe.”
“You can call me Jena. I asked you that question out on the porch to see if you were the type of person I wanted to talk to. I have a good feeling about you, John, that you’ll actually listen to me, to what I believe.”
Woven between the fabric of her words, I could hear the pain of a grieving mother. Her eyes carried a hint of sadness, the kind that is easily seen but not easily discussed. Opening my binder, I flipped to a blank page and grabbed my pen and tape recorder.
“Could I get you something to drink? I have coffee, tea, and water.”
“No, I’m all right.” I set the recorder down on the coffee table and hit the Record button. “I’m going to record our conversation, if that’s all right?”
“Yes, that’s perfectly fine.”
“Great. I’ll get right to it, Jena. Could you tell me about Billy growing up? How early did you knew he was gay?”
CHAPTER 2SILENCE FILLED THE ROOM FOR at least a minute. Jena didn’t appear to like where the conversation had gone—that much was easy to tell. Knowing that she had raised Billy in the walls of a church all his life, I knew it was a hard question but one that needed to be asked. I was the guy The Globe sent in when nobody else wanted to ask the tough questions, the guy they turned to when the facts needed to come out.
Jena finally spoke.
“Billy grew up without a father, John. He died early in life, at the age of twenty-four, from an accidental overdose of prescription drugs. That was twenty-two years ago, the year Billy was born. I was a single mom all through Billy’s life, working constantly and trying to do the best I could for my boy.” Her head dipped to her chest and she pressed a hand firmly against her forehead as she looked overwrought with shame. Her lips tightened, and she was able to compose herself. She looked at me, I mean really looked at me, and said, “Billy didn’t take his life out there at the cabin. That’s not what happened.”
Shaking my head, I said, “The coroner’s report and the investigation revealed—”
Jena held a hand up, her eyes lightly closing as she did. “I don’t care what the reports said. They can say whatever they want.” She opened her eyes and peered at me as she shook her head. “That investigation was a short open-and-shut case. They ruled it a suicide because he was prone to depression, because he was a homosexual.”
My interest was piqued, and I nodded. “Okay. Tell me more.”
“I tried to voice my concerns, but they didn’t care. Nobody did. Not even the LGBT community. They just saw me as a religious bigot who didn’t accept her son. One individual accused me of killing him.” Tears streaming down her cheeks, she wiped them.
I felt bad that someone had said that to a grieving mother. Yes, I had thought the same thing, but I’d never come out and tell her. There had to be some respect given for a mother who had just lost her child. Disgust filled me as I shook my head. “That isn’t right for someone to say you killed him.”
Her voice quieted and her eyes filled with tears. She looked at me. “I know my boy wouldn’t take his own life. I know it.”
I nodded and then asked, “But isn’t it true that you haven’t seen him in two years?”
“Kind of, but he chose that, not me. I loved my boy and he knew that. Yes, it’s against what the Bible says to be a homosexual, but that doesn’t mean I don’t love him.” She let out a sigh and continued. “Billy came by before he went up to the cabin a couple of months ago. He told me loved me, said that he feels like he’s almost out of the thick of the depression and to keep praying for him. He asked for me to pray for him, John. Now why would he do that?”
“Did he take medication for his depression?”
“He had been on medications for years for it, as far as I know.”
My heart broke for the woman as a mother. I felt that the pieces of Billy’s story lined up more and more as a suicide, nothing else. Jotting down a note about a warm embrace she had shared with him before he left to the cabin, I turned my eyes back to Jena. She leaned down beneath the coffee table and pulled out an old photo album. My instinct wanted to decline, but a part of me felt like it’d make the write-up better. For the next half hour, she showed picture after picture of Billy growing up. He looked like the rest of the kids in the photo album, a little dirty but well-loved.
CHAPTER 3A FEW CUPS OF COFFEE and a delightful slice of lemon meringue pie later, we finished perusing the photo album. As she closed it, I saw one last photograph on the back. It was of Billy in a cowboy hat, sitting on a trike. He couldn’t have been more than three years old. Underneath the photo, there was a hand-written note that read, My Heart, My Love, My Hope. It was easy to see that it was her handwriting. It matched all the little notes beneath the pictures inside the album. This woman was remarkable, both as a mother and a woman of God. I wasn’t religious by any means, but I respected the fact that she lived it daily.
Setting my empty cup of coffee down on the coffee table, I sat back in the couch, letting myself relax. I crossed a leg and finally said what was edging on my mind for a good portion of the evening. “I grew up Catholic.”
“Oh?” she commented as she put the photo album back underneath the coffee table. Sitting back, she looked over at me. “Do you still go to mass?”
Shaking my head, I looked away. “I haven’t been in twenty years. Not since I had to go as a kid.” Thinking about the photos, the stories behind Billy’s life, I found it remarkable that she was even able to speak about him after all that had just recently happened. “I have to ask . . . how are you doing so well?”
She nodded. “It’s a good question, John. I’m sad he’s gone, don’t get me wrong about that, but I serve a powerful and mighty living God. He promises to be near the broken-hearted, and though I’m not happy right now about my poor little Billy, I still have the joy of the Lord within me.” Her eyes glided away from mine and caught a picture of Billy across the room on the fireplace mantle. “I watched my son walk down the aisle at church and give his life over to Christ at the age of nine. I have peace knowing I’ll see him again in Heaven.”
Heaven. It was a hard topic for me to wrap my head around. Death and the afterlife weren’t something I particularly thought about much. It was time for me to go, and I rose to my feet. Gathering my things, I put them all away and said, “It was nice meeting you, Mrs. Wilcox—I mean, Jena.”
She smiled and stood up. “It was nice meeting you too, John. Which is sayin’ something since I’ve had a lot of reporters over here.”
Walking me to the door, she moved in for a hug, but I didn’t stop her. I felt awkward, but I went with it. As she hugged me, she said it again. “Billy didn’t kill himself. I know it and I hope you do too.”
As we released from our hug, I shrugged. “I’m not an investigator, just a reporter.”
“You like to report the truth, don’t you?” She reached into her pocket and fetched out a key. Handing it to me, she said, “I only went up there once, but I’m just a tired old lady who can’t see. Maybe you can find something?”
Her hope and trust in me were a bit shocking. Shaking my head as my eyes looked at the key, I said, “I can’t.”
She reached out and put it into my jacket’s chest pocket. “Think about it.”
CHAPTER 4THE ARTICLE WAS DONE BY nine o’clock that evening, but it wasn’t what I expected when I set out to meet with Mrs. Wilcox. Sitting back in my chair, I put my hands behind my head and let out a long, drawn-out sigh as my eyes tried to sift through the dimly lit office. Seeing a picture of my grandmother and me over on the shelf beside my signed baseball by Mickey Mantle, I smiled as I thought of her. She had been the woman who had raised me and took me to mass every Sunday, and we ate spaghetti every Thursday. Why couldn’t you have been gentle and sweet and accepting like Jena was tonight? I wondered as I stared at the picture of her. Shaking my head, I turned my eyes back to my laptop.
Seeing the word Heaven on the screen, panic rose up in me. What’s Tony going to think about this article? Tony was the guy I answered to at The Globe, and he wasn’t a very nice person when it came to anything to do with God or religion. He had sent me to meet with Jena to help slam Christianity. He wanted to link her to his death and help noble Billy as a gay hero who had killed himself because of his mother’s beliefs. This piece I wrote was nothing like that. My only hope was that Tony would overlook his own wants and see the value of the truth that I had written. I wasn’t sure how he’d take it.
Knowing my long-time friend and co-worker at The Globe, Henry Munson, would be willing to look it over, I pulled out my phone and sent him a text. If I could get him to weigh in on the story I wrote, maybe I could save myself from a big embarrassment—or better yet, maybe my worries were invalid.
Me: Hey, wanna grab a drink at the Celt? I have an article I need to show you.
Setting my phone down on the desk, I let out another sigh, the kind that you let out when you just aren’t sure about what you’re doing. My eyes caught her name on the screen. Jena. The woman wasn’t a bigot, she wasn’t angry, and she wasn’t any of that typical Westboro Baptist type of garbage I’d seen on the news and read about in the paper. She was different, way different, simply a broken-hearted mother who had lost her child whom she’d loved deeply.
As I waited for a reply from my buddy, I thought of what she’d said several times that night and I’d heard again several times on the tape. He wouldn’t kill himself.
My phone buzzed, pulling my attention.
Henry: Sure. Give me twenty minutes.
Hitting the Print key, I shut my laptop screen and grabbed my coat and keys. On the way out of the office, I scooped up the article from the print tray and headed down to the Celt…

Faith and Fiction: Meet Jessie
There are a ton of different stories (literally millions!), but there is but a small carving in the vast expanse of literary fiction where faith intertwines with fiction, giving rise to narratives that resonate deeply with the human soul and remind us that we’re not alone in the world. Christian fiction is designed to serve others, not only for entertainment value but in Spiritual depth and growth. These kinds of stories serve as beacons of light in a world often overshadowed by darkness. Through its pages, readers embark on journeys of discovery, encountering characters whose lives reflect the timeless struggles and triumphs of the human condition.
In our ongoing series, “Faith and Fiction,” we dive head first into the heart of this genre, seeking to understand the motivation behind the authors who pen these stories of faith. In our first interview, I had the pleasure of getting to know Jennifer Rodewald (read interview). Today, we have the privilege of conversing with Jessie Gussman, a bestselling author whose literary prowess and unwavering faith have captivated audiences around the globe (including myself). With each keystroke, Gussman paints vivid portraits of grace and redemption, inviting readers to explore the depths of their own spiritual walks with Christ while traversing the landscapes of her imagination.
As we sit down with Gussman, I’m reminded of the transformative power of storytelling—a power that transcends the boundaries of time and space and it’s power to infuse meaning and purpose into our lives as authors and as readers. Through her characters’ struggles and triumphs, Gussman offers glimpses of hope in a world often fraught with uncertainty and despair. Her stories serve as beacons of light, guiding readers through the darkness and into the embrace of the divine love of a Heavenly Father.
Join me as I embark on this enlightening journey of what makes this author tick. Through my conversation with Jessie Gussman, I explore the intricate interplay between faith and storytelling, discovering along the way the profound truths that lie at the heart of Christian fiction and those who write it.
Introduction To JessieCan you please introduce yourself and share a bit about your journey as a Christian fiction author? What inspired you to write Christian fiction?
Hi! I’m Jessie Gussman and I never dreamed I’d be an author. I loved to read and was never far from a book from elementary school on. Back then we had literal books. : )
One day in 2013 not long after ebooks became a thing – when I was still reading books borrowed from the library on an app on my laptop – I slammed my laptop closed after a disappointing experience and said to the living room in general, “Anyone could write a better book than that!”
My husband happened to be walking through the room on his way to check our maple sap which was boiling outside, and he said, “Well, why don’t you?”
I had honestly never in my life considered writing a book, and I wasn’t sure I could. But, five years and more than a million words later on December 22, 2018, I hit “publish” on my very first, self-published title.
I wrote the books I loved to read – romance with faith and fun and regular people living for God. I had heard preaching against romance books, even Christian romance. And I couldn’t disagree that some romance books had a tendency to make a person – a woman – unhappy in her marriage, where her husband just couldn’t live up to the standards that romances usually had for heroes. I wanted to write books that weren’t just “Christian” but that encouraged and inspired women in their walk with Jesus.
The How & Why of Faith and FictionHow do you see faith and fiction working together in your writing? How do you integrate Christian themes and values into your stories?
Like I said earlier, I had sat under preaching that condemned romance as “ungodly” and a waste of time. I’ve even had readers say to me that they’d been told that by their pastor (or pastor’s wife) as well. My response is that Jesus taught through parables. Partly because it wasn’t time for Him to say everything plainly, and partly, I believe, because people learn better through stories. It’s been studied and proven that students’ retention goes up when their subject matter is presented in story form. We all love a good story, right?
As for how I integrate Christian themes and values in my stories, I wish I had a good answer to that, but I usually just try to come up with a great story and pray that God will bless it and have it say what He wants it to. I very seldom deliberately sit down with a specific theme in mind. However, I do think that it’s important for me to read the Bible and study it. I’ve read the Bible through every year except one (when I spent the year reading through the New Testament) for the last twenty-five years. What is in our heart and mind has a tendency to spill out, and that’s my explanation for how my stories end up with Christian teaching, themes and values.
In what ways do you believe Christian fiction contributes to the spiritual growth and development of readers?
I think in a good story, readers relate to the characters and say, “That could be me!” Stories teach through situations and struggles that come to life for readers. They see how things could be handled in a Godly way, they see what the Bible says about things – sometimes it surprises them what the Bible says! – and they can be convicted about making changes in their own life.
How Christian Fiction Builds The ChurchHow do you envision your role as a Christian fiction author in building and strengthening the church community?
Well, first of all, I feel like we should all be a part of our local church and serve our community in whatever way we can, whether we’re an author or not. But I recognize that a lot of my readers look to me as an example. I considered this for a while, and I pretty much just try to live what I believe – that we should all be servants and that we should live for Jesus daily. I’m not any good at pretending to be something I’m not anyway.
When Covid hit, I started thinking more about using my platform to inspire and encourage. My newsletter almost always has a Bible verse and uplifting quotes from Christians. I post a Bible verse daily in my Facebook Reader group, along with an uplifting, encouraging quote. I post hymn lyrics on Sundays and I often write devotions. Sundays sometimes feel like a church service in my Reader Chat, although we do a lot of laughing together as well. For readers who are shut in or can’t get to church, it’s a great place to be. We also have a weekly prayer post where anyone can ask for prayer about anything. Actually, I combined the devotions I’ve written into a non-fiction title called Faith on the Farm. Through all of my interactions, I just try to live according to the Bible and look to Jesus as my inspiration.
How do you hope your stories impact readers’ understanding of the church and their relationship with God and fellow believers?
Nothing makes me happier than when a reader tells me that my stories help them have a closer walk with Jesus, that they’re back in church, that their marriage is happier, that they have restored relationships or that their children/spouse/friend has been changed by listening to what I’ve written. Just to be clear, that is all God. My books, my writing and myself are nothing without Him.
How Christian Fiction Can Nurture FaithHow do you approach the portrayal of faith journeys and spiritual struggles in your novels? What message or lesson do you hope readers take away from these depictions?
I believe I touched on this earlier. I don’t approach my story with a set idea. Most of the time, I just put the characters in the story, give them problems to work out, and have them grow and change according to principles from God’s Word. I pray over my writing and ask the Lord to make my work be a blessing to just one person. Of course, like I said earlier, lessons are always learned better through interesting and entertaining stories.
Can you share a personal anecdote or testimony of a reader who has been deeply impacted by your Christian fiction?
Weekly, and sometimes daily, I get notes from readers who have been impacted by my books – because of God. Very early in my career, I had a reader email me from the parking lot where she’d just been told her mammogram had shown a “shadow” and she needed to go back for more tests. She was crying and scared and said she didn’t know why, but I seemed like someone she could talk to about this. I promised I would pray, and I did – fervently. Several weeks later all her tests came back clear, praise God. I’ve had many instances like that where readers have emailed me asking for prayer or thanking me because my books have caused them to get back in church, treat their spouse better or encouraged them through dark times. I often say that readers cannot say anything that makes my heart happier than to hear that they’re closer to Jesus because of my books.
Faith and Fiction: Outreach & EngagementHow do you engage with your readership and interact with your audience through your writing? Do you receive feedback from readers regarding the spiritual impact of your novels?
My Facebook group is a great place for feedback, and I also get responses from my newsletter every time I send one out.
Yes, absolutely, readers give feedback. Mostly through email, but I also see readers talking about the impact of my books in the reviews they leave. I get a lot of reviews that say things like this:
“Like all of Jessie’s stories, this one caused me to look at myself and how I live my life. Jessie gives me so much to think about and causes me to aspire to be a better person.”
“Every time I read a Gussman book, I’m encouraged and chastised and uplifted and I know I’m not alone and that we’re all striving together.”
“Isn’t it amazing when we see that Jessie Gussman has used her God-given gift to write relatable, challenging, and enjoyable characters, while sharing situations with us where we can learn more about our relationship with God!?!. I have learned so much by relating to her characters.”
Have you encountered any challenges or obstacles in writing Christian fiction, particularly in conveying spiritual themes and messages effectively?
This is mostly a no for me, because I typically don’t think about the themes and message – I just let that up to the Lord. There have been a few times where I have deliberately taken on some heavier topics – one of my heroines was a porn star, and I also have a story where my hero worked in the adult film industry. I did try to handle those things sensitively and compassionately, focusing on grace and God’s absolute forgiveness, while still conveying the scars sin leaves behind.

The librarian might be a little shy and socially inept, but she does not need kissing lessons.
Lucas Clyborne has had his eye on Sweet Water’s librarian, Ryland Solomon, for almost a year. He’s even started going to the library and checking out books. Who knew Extreme Ironing was a thing? So, maybe he had a little trouble concentrating on looking for suitable books since his attention seemed to get fixed on the cute librarian who didn’t seem to know he was alive.
Ryland didn’t know why Lucas all the sudden had a fascination with obscure books like The Iliad and Favorite Ties of Latin American Presidents, but she is sure he’s up to no good. So, when he finally asks her out on a date, over a pristine copy of The Lullabies of Serial Killers, of course she…agrees?
The date was a disaster since Ryland didn’t say a word the entire time and Lucas ended up eating her food. But somehow they go on another one. And another. Until Lucas’s family ranch is in danger of foreclosure and he does something radical, something that will end the relationship that never really got started, unless Ryland finds the courage to flip the script and save her own cowboy hero.
Maybe she’ll get those kissling lessons after all.

Faith and Fiction: Meet Jen
In a world inundated with narratives of a wide variety, each narrative seeking to pull our attention and spiritual allegiance, there’s a unique power in narrative found within storytelling. Stories have the unique ability to captivate, inspire, and transform the reader. Our Savior Jesus Christ told stories throughout His ministry here on earth in order to “hang a lantern” on the truth. He did this through parables. Today, as Christian fiction authors, we have the distinct pleasure and purpose of telling stories that inspire our readers. I’m excited and pleased to announce this new blog series: Faith and Fiction.
Welcome to “Faith and Fiction,” a series of insightful interviews with my fellow Christian fiction authors who are dedicated to illuminating the Christian faith through storytelling. In this series, we will dive into the hearts, motivations, and minds of writers who craft narratives that resonate with the souls of readers and carry the weight of eternity on every page.
In a world full of darkness that seems to prevail far too often, Christian fiction stands as a beacon of light, truth, and hope. It offers glimpses of light and redemption in an otherwise broken world. It’s through the lives and actions of characters authors create and the worlds they build that readers are able to experience the beauty and power of the truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Our first interview features Jennifer Rodewald, a talented Christian author whose works of fiction often intersect with faith. With a deep understanding of the human condition and a heart for great storytelling, Jennifer’s novels resonate deeply with her readers.
Introduction To JenCan you please introduce yourself and share a bit about your journey as a Christian fiction author? What inspired you to write Christian fiction?
HI! I’m Jennifer Rodewald. Most of my friends call me Jen. I grew up reading Christian romance, and also writing stories as a way of processing life. In books, I found friends who showed me how life can be when one follows Jesus, and how struggles, failures, disappointments, and confusion can all find rest and renewed hope in surrendering to Christ. As I grew up, I also found satisfaction and joy in studying God’s word. For me, it is a natural blend to write fiction that points to Truth.
The How & Why of Faith and FictionHow do you see faith and fiction working together in your writing? How do you integrate Christian themes and values into your stories?
I learn best through story, and I have found that God knows how to teach my heart in ways that make sense and yield deep impact—again, through story. So when I write, I learn. About myself, and others, but more importantly, more about the Lover of my soul. I’m not sure I intentionally integrate themes and values as much as they are always the foundation of how I see the world. Life doesn’t make sense without God, and so, one way or another, He is always part of the stories I tell.
In what ways do you believe Christian fiction contributes to the spiritual growth and development of readers?
Stories, when told with the gentleness of grace as well as the edge of truth, will challenge us. Make us ask questions like: What do I believe? How do I respond? What do I need to do better to better reflect Jesus to the world around me? Is there something in here that I need to deal with between Jesus and me?
Well-told stories should make us examine our lives, and that has great potential for spiritual growth. I think that’s one reason why Jesus used them so often.
How Christian Fiction Builds The ChurchHow do you envision your role as a Christian fiction author in building and strengthening the church community?
I’m just a girl who loves Jesus and tells stories. However God chooses to use that, in my life or in others’, is to His credit and glory.
How do you hope your stories impact readers’ understanding of the church and their relationship with God and fellow believers?
One of the things that I’ve been challenged with most as I write gritty characters who can be difficult has been; is this how I respond in real life?
How we handle fiction reflects how we respond to others in real life. Over and again, I’ve had to really examine my heart, finding in it so much pride, so much hardness. For me, it draws me to the cross, a place of repentance. Over time, I have softened from a harsh pharisee to a soul who longs for grace for herself as well as for others. There is beauty in that, you know? God continues to work grace in our lives, even in the hardest soils of our hearts.
How Christian Fiction Can Nurture FaithHow do you approach the portrayal of faith journeys and spiritual struggles in your novels? What message or lesson do you hope readers take away from these depictions?
So many of my stories are based on the testimony of others I’ve witnessed, or the legacies left to me by those who have gone before me. When I consider those true-life stories, I am put in a place of wonder at God’s power and grace to change a life. I also am reminded that quiet, gentle stories have great impact as well—I mean consider the drastic differences in the testimonies of the Apostle Paul and Barnabus. One is bigger than life, and the other is simple and consistent. Yet without Barnabus, I’m not sure Paul’s life would have had the impact it did. I’m not even sure he’d have been accepted at the church in Jerusalem. I want both in my stories—because they both matter to the Kingdom.
As far as message—ultimately, I want what the Psalmist writes in Psalm 115: “Not to us, Lord, not to us but to your name be the glory, because of your love and faithfulness.”
Can you share a personal anecdote or testimony of a reader who has been deeply impacted by your Christian fiction?
I have cried over some touching emails, and find great encouragement in reviews such as this (from The Carpenter’s Daughter): “I have asked myself who I am or am I really who God has created me to be? Am I living a vision of myself or the vision of how the Creator of the universe sees me?”
Faith and Fiction: Outreach & EngagementHow do you engage with your readership and interact with your audience through your writing? Do you receive feedback from readers regarding the spiritual impact of your novels?
I always welcome emails at jen@authorjenrodewald.com. I do receive feedback from readers—usually, they’re very encouraging.
I also post a couple of times a week on my Facebook author page (not my personal page) verses and quotes that I hope will serve as an encouragement to my readers. Those posts are often included in my newsletter, which is where I find the most interaction with my readers.
I will say that while feedback from readers is important, and I consider all that I receive, positive and negative, ultimately, I lay my work before God. It’s His approval I seek, which is an anchor, because there have been times when a critic could have ended my career with discouragement.
I think that’s important to remember, no matter who you are or what you do. Do your work before God, lay it out for His inspection.
Have you encountered any challenges or obstacles in writing Christian fiction, particularly in conveying spiritual themes and messages effectively?
Perhaps one of the greatest challenges has been that not all of my stories have the same level of depth, and sometimes that will throw my readers off. I get it! There are certain expectations that are established, and when something different comes, sometimes we get a little upset. The thing is, I can’t keep doing the same thing over and over again. I just don’t have the mental/spiritual capacity for it. So sometimes I write a story that is lighter. Or, as in my most recent series, I try something entirely different.
That’s not always met with kindness.
And that can be discouraging—especially when there are subtle accusations of losing sight of spiritual things. I haven’t lost sight of them. But climbing mountains all the time isn’t possible for me. Sometimes a girl just needs a sweet story. Or a laugh. I must remind myself that this is okay, and yet again, take my stories and lay them before God.
What’s Going On Right Now For Jen?Could you tell us about your latest release or promotional book? Please provide a brief blurb or description of the book, along with any relevant information about the author.
My latest books are part of my newest series—Redemption Shores. This is the one that is most different from my other books, starting with the fact that it’s a saga-style series. Think of your favorite drama TV series (one of mine is Heartland), and that will help frame the style. Each book is a complete story . . . but there are many unanswered questions left at the end, because . . . well, that’s a reflection of life! LOL.
Lakeshore Wandering is the first book, and it was originally written as a spin-off of the ‘80’s romcom movie Overboard. I had fun with it, but it was a challenge to weave anything spiritual into the story. When the spiritual thread emerged, I discovered that the whole story was going to take a whole lot more than any single book could reasonably (and believably) hold. Thus, a saga was born!
It’s a different way of writing a book! But I’ve enjoyed it—especially how I’ve been able to really dig deep into character development and spiritual arcs. It feels more realistic to me—though the slow growth of some hits directly against my personal impatience. It’s another opportunity for me to grow as a person, as it serves to remind me that sometimes growth in real life is painfully slow.
Lake Shore Awakening, Book 4 in the saga, releases on March 28th. I’m planning at least one more book for this series, but who knows? There might be more to tell after that.
Additionally, we’d love to hear about what you’re currently working on and any upcoming projects you’re excited about.
I was honored to be invited to work with five other wonderful authors on a new project that will come out later this year . . . we haven’t announced it yet, so I’ll just have to say stay tuned for more.
It’s been a fun project, and I think our readers are going to love what we have in store for them!
