Sunshine Somerville is a Science Fantasy author who loves blending genres. She has a degree in English Literature and self-published her first book at the ripe old age of nine.  She currently lives on the beachy side of Michigan with her husband, daughters, and rescued dogs.
The Kota Series is a Science Fantasy epic based on youthful obsessions with X-Men, Star Wars, The Chronicles of Narnia, Dark Angel, and A Wrinkle in Time.
The Alt-World Chronicles is an Urban Fantasy series inspired by weird recurring dreams, a brainstorming session in the shower, and one ridiculously hot summer lived in Kansas City.
A Fairly Fairy Tale is Sunshine’s first Middle Grade Fantasy book. She got the idea from her family’s crest, which portrays a dragon shootin

These characters and the overall plot has all been in my head forever, so the basic story part was quite easy to write and just plain fun.
However, my series has a mystery element to it, so the trickiest thing was figuring out what to reveal when. In each book, you learn a little bit more about the virus/treatment (along with the light/dark allegory), so the hardest thing was deciding how to pace revealing all of that.

“I've always thought it's unfair how people view night as a cold thing of death. I've always looked at night as a thing of forgiveness. 'Night as a cool, covering blanket that erases whatever wrongs were committed during the day and gives us a pause before starting anew.”
Sunshine Somerville, Pharmakon

“Just as we are given the freedom to choose evil, so we are given the freedom to choose good. Free will can bring us to dust as a species, but it can also bring us to redemption.”
Sunshine Somerville, The Kota

“We should look for the light, the good, the grace of Heaven wherever it might be, even admist the filth we are so quick to judge beneath us. We cannot assume we are the arbiters of righteousness. We don't shape Heaven; Heaven shapes us. Nor do we shape Hell.”
Sunshine Somerville, Zenith Prophecies

“I don't deserve any credit for turning the other cheek as my tongue is always in it.”
Flannery O'Connor, The Habit of Being: Letters of Flannery O'Connor

“Similarly, the impulse to keep to yourself what you have learned is not only shameful, it is destructive. Anything you do not give freely and abundantly becomes lost to you. You open your safe and find ashes.”
Annie Dillard, The Writing Life: The Classic Essay Collection on the Creative Process
