I think of my dream work (research and consulting) as my calling, and yet writing has been a constant part of this work: books, ebooks, blogs, and, in the early days, newsletters. I remember writing books when I was a small child, folded paper pages stapled together, stories and illustrations. I remember my school teacher when I was seven, Mr Reedling, making me read out the opening sentences to my story, because I didn't start with 'once upon a time'. I remember crafting that story, thinking it would be exciting to begin it with something one of my characters exclaimed. I remember, at age 11, being caught out by my teacher for writing a story instead of listening to her lesson. Instead of punishing me, she asked me to write a school magazine. I handwrote the school magazine every month for a year, asked other students to contribute. In my first job after university, I was asked to write. Oh, I could write a book about this. Suddenly I'm remembering so many times when writing called to me, and yet I've never thought of writing as a calling. Thank you.(less)

If we ask children about their dreams in ways that show we're excited about and respect and value their dream experiences, we help them build respect and value too. One of the quickest ways to turn off recall is to dismiss our children's dreams as unimportant, meaningless, or something they shouldn't worry about or bring to the breakfast table. If children sense our interest in their dreams, they feel more comfortable acknowledging and exploring them. So it doesn't really matter what questions we ask, and as long as our responses to the questions are accepting and loving, they will begin to remember more of their dreams and want to share them.

Once dream recall and open communication is well established, a good question to help children (and adults) gain helpful insight from their dreams is "What does the feeling you get in your dream remind you of in your life now?" Dreams reflect the last 1-2 days.(less)
