I'm an aspiring writer, but I'm dealing with two things: I get discouraged every single day because 96% of manuscripts are rejected, and I haven't had an idea for years, literally. There's too many people wanting to be writers, and knowing there's so much competition just kills me a little every day. When I get motivated, immediatly something appears about the industry that kills it. Any tips on how to deal with this?

Hopefully, you've figured things our already. If not, here's my reply.

One of the hardest things in the world for a writer to do is to NOT compare your work and success to any other writer. Every writer's journey to publication is different. This is a tough business, and demands a thick skin--at least as often as you can manage it. There will be days when, no matter what stage of your career, the mental game will get to you. My best advice is this:
1. Write the story you want to tell. Love your characters and your work. Educate yourself as much as you can through workshops/classes/reading so that the work you produce is something you love and feel strongly about. iow, try to ignore social media and the depressing news that can derail you, and just write. Get the story done first--then worry about the rest.

2. Surround yourself with people who support your dream to be a published author--with people who respect your time when you're writing, as well as those who can celebrate your successes (completing a ms, submitting a ms, querying an editor or agent, meeting your daily or weekly word count goal, etc.) Find a writers' group (but be make sure it's a group that supports what you like to write--i.e. a group of poets or non-fiction writers might not understand the particular trials and tribulations of publishing romance or science fiction, etc., and make sure the group has both experienced writers who can offer advice or possibly mentor you, as well as writers at your level of the publishing experience who can relate to where you are). Your support can be one friend or a group--as long as they're in your corner. There's soooo much info out there on social media, it can get depressing to hear of someone else's successes or discouraging to hear of imposing statistics or failures.

3. Set smaller, achievable goals--not just, I want to publish my story. Try writing a short story or novella. Write an individual scene or chapter. Write 1000 words a day, or over a weekend, depending on your schedule. Write a synopsis and query letter. Then get yourself a fun calendar and put a sticker or draw a star on it every time you achieve one of those mini-goals.

And finally, read. A lot. The kinds of stories you want to write. Stories by your favorite authors. Remind yourself why you want to write and tell stories in the first place. Plus, there's the added bonus of expanding vocabulary; studying plotting, pacing and characterization, etc.

It was called UNSANCTIONED MEMORIES. A good family friend runs an antiques business south of Lone Jack. She owns lots of dogs, too. I had a reclusive heroine, living with her dog, so I based the heroine's home on her Log Cabin Antiques. I think my hero left his car in Lone Jack and hiked down to the heroine's place.

I remember the copyeditor arguing with me (friendly arguing) that I could have a road named Lovers Lane. I have a picture of the crossroads sign near this antiques business... called Lovers Lane. Don't know if you're familiar with it.
