It is the setting of the classic Canadian novel, Anne of Green Gables and the character, Anne Shirley, had a huge influence on my childhood. When I was in middle school, my friend Katie and I even imagined that our schoolyard were various settings in the book. She would be Diana and I would be Anne. We were quite geeky but completely obsessed with the book and its characters. Green Gables, the house belonging to the Cuthberts, Anne's adopted parents, actually is quite a popular tourist attraction. But I've never been to PEI. Even though I could visit it now as a tourist, it would certainly be amazing to travel to the fictional world created by Lucy Maud Montgomery. (less)

It's a memoir about her childhood trauma growing up in North America as a Chilean refugee. My brother got it for me for Christmas and I still haven't read it, as I've been busy prepping for new courses at the high school where I teach and editing my new novel. Also, I want to read "A Little Life" by Hanya Yanagihara (another Christmas gift!), which looks like a very powerful read about 4 friends in New York City who have graduated from college.

Since I'm teaching High School French, I am trying to make an effort to read more in French to improve my vocabulary. One of my friends lent me "Cinquante Nuances de Grey" (50 Shades of Grey in French) last summer and I still haven't read it...not like it will help me with vocab I could use in the classroom--LOL! So if anyone has any suggestions of great francophone literature, please let me know!

If I get really ambitious, I will also try to read something in Spanish...but YA or Graphic Novels are likely the best option for me due to my fluency level (intermediate)(less)

Amazon Jungle Photos

Three-toed Sloth

I have been lucky to have spent the last few summers in the Amazon Rainforest in Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve, Ecuador. This has helped me invest time in learning how to take better photos of wildlife!

Capped Heron

It takes time to be able to have the opportunity to see wildlife. I learned from participating on many 4 to 5 day jungle tours, that even with the best guide, that sometimes

“Even the tiniest of flowers can have the toughest roots.”
Shannon M Mullen, See What Flowers

“That’s what mountains do, they taunt you, lure you to the freedom of the wilderness, and it is fucking exhilarating.”
Shannon M Mullen, See What Flowers

“Due to their short bloom time, Sakura blossoms are a metaphor for life itself: beautiful yet fleeting. You’ll realize when you’re as old as me to hang on to the good times because they won’t last forever.”
Shannon M Mullen, See What Flowers

“Is there such a thing as being too happy?”
Shannon M Mullen, See What Flowers

“Can you revive wilted tulips?”
Shannon M Mullen, See What Flowers

“Family is the most important thing in this life.”
Shannon M Mullen, See What Flowers

“Just as I’m about to continue walking along the shoreline, the left third of the iceberg breaks off suddenly and crashes violently, like a high-rise apartment building imploding in the heart of the city. Tears roll down my face uncontrollably as I watch the two distinct halves of the iceberg drift further and further apart from each other. It’s devastating to watch something that seems so strong and unbreakable crumble in an instant. Even more devastating is the feeling that there’s nothing I can do about it.”
