Unlike Santa, Sinter…more"Yuletide Snacks", a fantasy police procedural. When I lived on Bonaire, I got introduced to Sinterklaas and the Zwarte Pieteren. Unlike Santa, Sinterklaas isn't satisfied with leaving bad children a lump of coal: he kidnaps them and forces them to work in his Spanish sweatshop, making gifts for the good children.

While writing "Everything I Know About Zombies, I Learned in Kindergarten", I came across the legend of the cuco: a large, shape-changing boogeyman that eats bad children.

It occurred to me that the cucuy must view Sinterklaas as an exotic food importer. The rest of the book flows from that premise.(less)

While it has improved in later seasons, the first season had two classes of characters: white men with guns took the lead, everyone else was a prop.(less)
