Manchester Vice - my upcoming noir crime novel
It's often said that the main character in a book must be good, i.e., morally upright, otherwise the book won't sell.
I disagree. I can think of several exceptions to this supposed rule, e.g.: The Killer Inside Me, The Talented Mr. Ripley, It Happened in Boston?, and Cockpit - to name a few.
I set out to challenge the view that the main protagonist in a novel must be morally upright when I wrote Confessions of an English Psychopath last year.
The hero of that book - if you could call him that - is ruthless and has few, if any, redeeming features.
Guess what? People seem to like him.
So this year I've gone one further.
I've written a book called 'Manchester Vice' about a man who's even less likeable than my English psychopath character. He's called Brad Sharpe and he's witty, charming, selfish, and deadly.
His story has much in common with that of Lou Ford, the central character in 'The Killer Inside Me'.
It'll be interesting to see how popular Brad Sharpe - and the book he stars in - prove to be.
Is there still a big market for noir fiction? I like to think so!
Let me know what you think.
In the meantime, I'll be looking for a publisher for 'Manchester Vice'. I'll keep you posted with details of my progress.
