Gabriella Contestabile is an author, educator, and owner of SU MISURA JOURNEYS, a boutique travel company connecting people to the artisans of Florence. She emigrated, with her parents, from Italy to New York City in 1959. In her pre-writer life, she worked as a foreign language teacher, management development specialist, and fragrance/cosmetics executive. Gabriella is a strong advocate of the arts, of multiculturalism, and of social justice—a passion inspired by reading Dickens and Dante at a very young age. She has been an active volunteer with Dress for Success for over eight years and is a member of the Slow Food NYC Food and Farm Policy Task Force. She lives on the Upper West Side with her husband, her daughter, her mom, and a furry Sh ...more

I procrastinate. I take on meaningless projects. I just re-alphebetized my book collection -for the tenth time! And what's with the Bollywood dance classes? Must admit I love those. Or I do the Italian thing-go for an espresso!

Joking aside, the espresso and a long walk usually do the trick.

It took me 15 years to finally finish 'The Artisan's Star' so I'm not one to offer advice worth taking.

Art takes us there. Reading a novel, a short story, a great work of fiction or non-fiction is one of life's most intimate experiences. It touches us deeply as readers. As a writer you get to live inside the worlds of your characters. You see and you understand, and you grow. How very exciting -albeit painful and difficult.(less)

“Life Outside the Box” Book Review

IMG_1117

As I settled in with my morning espresso and the first delightful chapter of ‘Life Outside the Box’ I thought of Arianna, the Bloomingdale’s seamstress. Years ago I’d watched her fold hems of designer trousers, take pins out of her mouth, line up the fabric just so, pin it again. I saw her nip in the waist of an Armani jacket, and check that the lines in back fell flat and sharp.

And so

“His mother's Femme smelled of plums, flowers and smoky sandalwood. It made him think of the silk and linen dresses that fluttered around her knees on windy days. Her gloves smelled of it, and her shawls. It was his mother's scent only, and he liked that when she left a room it would trail in the air behind her, making him feel safe.”

“Mom, how do you know if the guy is the guy?”

You mean if he’ll be a good husband?” She pauses, then says “The ticket is for the man to love the woman more than she loves him.”

Shouldn’t it be equal?”

Mom cackles. “It can never be equal.”

But what if the woman loves the man more?”

A life of hell awaits her. As women, the deck is stacked against us because time is our enemy. We age, while men season. And trust me, there are plenty of women out there looking for a man, and they don’t mind staking a claim on somebody else’s husband, no matter how old, creaky, and deaf they are.”
Adriana Trigiani, Very Valentine

“On the whole, I think you should write biographies of those you admire and respect, and novels about human beings who you think are sadly mistaken.”
Penelope Fitzgerald

“In my mind I am eloquent; I can climb intricate scaffolds of words to reach the highest cathedral ceilings and paint my thoughts. But when I open my mouth, everything collapses.”
Isaac Marion, Warm Bodies

“You should always be taking pictures, if not with a camera then with your mind. Memories you capture on purpose are always more vivid than the ones you pick up by accident.”
Isaac Marion, Warm Bodies

“The world breaks everyone, and afterward, many are strong at the broken places.”
Ernest Hemingway
