Meet Charlotte Olmes, Woman Detective
It always happens when I daydream. I come up with some idea, some concept that's so immediately engrossing that I can't help but write the story born of that idea. It happened last spring while I was thinking about steam punk fiction. I really enjoy the genre, but whenever I try to write it I can't help but fall into purer historical fiction.
That's what happened when I imagined Charlotte Olmes and Joanna Wilson. I had hoped to give them a steam punk setting, but the real world history of 1880s New York City was fascinating enough without any added flourishes.
Since then, I've been completely engrossed in penning the crime-solving adventures of Charlotte Olmes and Joanna Wilson— yes, a lesbian spin on Holmes and Watson set in 1880s New York City. Working to aid women whose voices are limited by decorum, Olmes ventures into places forbidden to the fairer sex, sleuthing after clues hidden, elusive, and often distasteful.
And unlike their male predecessors, Olmes and Wilson are anything but celibate prudes. I made sure of that.
The novella possibilities for Olmes and Wilson are as endless as those work for Sir Conan Arthur Doyle's original sleuths, and I hope this series will prove successful enough that I can keep writing their tales until they and I are long in the teeth. If you must know—and you must, you must!—I've already sketched out two more tales for the year 1880. But for now, let me introduce you to the first volume in the Charlotte Olmes Mysteries, Of White Snakes and Misshaped Owls:
When the exotic Miss Tam pleads with Charlotte to find the man to whom she's secretly married, Charlotte steps into the dark and dangerous crannies of the city with her partner and passionate lover Joanna Wilson at her side. Soon, what appeared to be the random misfortune born of Chinatown's opium dens reveals itself as a vicious gang-related murder—and Olmes and Wilson find themselves wedged between the ethnic and political forces that collide where Chinatown borders the Bowery.
Penned by Lambda Literary Award winner Debra Hyde, Of White Snakes and Misshaped Owls recasts the classic eccentric detective genius in ways never before seen. Passions both criminal and carnal come alive in vivid and exacting detail in what promises to become the hallmark of the Charlotte Olmes Mystery Series.
