Award-winning author Lois Leveen dwells in the spaces where literature and history meet. A confirmed book geek, Lois earned degrees in history and literature from Harvard, the University of Southern California, and UCLA, and taught at UCLA and at Reed College. Shakespeare gave me the greatest gift anyone can give an author: the inspiration for an entire book. In ROMEO AND JULIET, he gives the nurse, Angelica, the largest number of speeches after the title characters. He tells us she has this amazing backstory -- her own daughter was born at the same time as Juliet but died, and in her grief she gets this other baby to love and nurture but in whose household she is merely a servant. And he makes her funny, tragic, poignant, everything you want in a character. I loved telling her story in my novel JULIET'S NURSE, and I loved having Shakespeare as my 'collaborator.'(less)

I absolutely loved "Juliet's Nurse." Have you any plans for a similar novel based on a minor character in another of Shakespeare's plays? Or, indeed, from any particular piece of classic literature?
