Why hobbies matter

I needed to quiet my mind, so I’ve gotten into and returned to some new hobbies this year.
The past two years have been the hardest of my life. A dear friend doesn’t want much to do with me in light of a hard conversation we had two years ago. Hers was a gradual pulling away, but my grief is fairly constant. Parenting has been challenging, although we are in a better place. Also, my role as a school board member became exhausting.
Seasons change, thankfully, and I let go of some resp...

Run to God for His glory

“Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it. Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air. But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.”
Growing up, “athlete” wasn’t a label I would h...

Double digits

Rachel wants to be a teenager so badly. I’m guessing it has to do with her teenage brother and sister – and the fact that their friends are typically very kind to the little sister. Regardless, here we are with evidence that birth order and age gaps in a family shape a person.
Today she turns 10. Two hands full. Double digits. Or, like her dad said, a TEN-AGER. Get it? Like a teenager, but with one less E.
Regardless of what you want to call it, this girl is easy...

What exercise class teaches about life

Most challenging things are done with others. In August 2024, I initially signed up for this weekly class on my own, totally unsure if I’d know anyone other than the instructor. Turns out, another friend signed up too. Yes! There was an acquaintance whom I’ve since gotten to know better. My friend’s schedule changed, and she can’t come anymore, but now, more than a year in, I’ve recruited a couple of friends to come! We’ve even started meeting to warm up with a walk first. It’s good for me e...

Traditions that bond us

When the extended Hills family gathered at our lake houses in 2016, I’m not sure anyone knew we were starting a tradition. I don’t even remember if our aim was every other year or if we even talked about future plans. I know for sure, we had no idea all the changes that would accompany our family in the years we continued to gather.
If my pictures are telling me an accurate story, the Hills have gathered together at Shelter Point Retreat for Memorial Day weekend in 2016, 2018, 2021, and ...

The beauty of studying God’s Word

In 2015, I began studying the Bible with some acquaintances, and doing so truly changed my life. One friend invited me. I recognized others because our kids went to school together. I essentially never left that every-other-Thursday-morning study.
Groups changed, friendships were deepened, COVID-19 protocols interrupted us, and groups multiplied. All because we studied the Word of God together. My closest friends are the product of this Bible study that has cycled through many different ...

The Summer that Surprised Me

The summer wasn’t what I was expecting, but that’s not a complaint. The 86 days of Summer Break became a season of new things for our family, for most of which I wasn’t mentally prepared. In general, we never got into any rhythm. I know routines are hard to come by in the summer, but there wasn’t even a rhythm.
Cate adopted a college schedule with evening Bible studies, a week-long trip that gave her a taste of freedom and some new friends, and working various jobs. That meant she stayed...

Guten tag, Helen!

We are in an interesting parenting season where our kids all have their own seasons and struggles. Family isn’t always easy, but these are my favorite people, and time with them is a gift.
In mid-July, we spent three days in Helen, Georgia, together. Helen is a small, German-inspired town in the Blue Ridge Mountains in north Georgia.
We established some new inside jokes, made new memories, and worked through some hard moments. We didn’t have this trip planned at the beginning of the ...

This year’s books … so far

I’m going to skip all the cliches about how I can’t believe we’re halfway through the year, and get straight to the #KHTreads recaps. So far in 2025, I’ve read 40 books. The majority have been romance or suspense, but historical and contemporary fiction have also been thrown in. In addition to the brief reviews, I included links to Amazon and noted where I bought or borrowed the book. I use Goodreads star ratings as I read them.
Romance “ Prime Time Romance ” by Kate Robb – I was a li...June 25, 2025
How to connect amid summer chaos

Historically, summer has been a good time to connect while routines are different but rhythms still exist in our days. I’m reminded this year that each season is different. This summer feels like its own thing, different from last summer or what’s to come next summer.
And, let’s be honest, this summer it seems none of my people have synced schedules, making it a little more difficult to connect, but we’re trying anyway! Maybe you’re experiencing the same thing with schedules all over the...
