Karen Karlitz spent many years as an editor/writer for various publications and as a regular contributor to the Los Angeles Times. Her fiction and nonfiction has appeared in numerous literary journals, anthologies and newspapers.

Often what happens is the hour passes as you continue writing without noticing that two, three, even four hours have gone by. Of course there will be times when your screen remains blank or nothing worth keeping materializes. Get up after your hour and try again, hopefully the next day or sometime soon. Many successful writers say there's no way of knowing when your words will flow, but if you're not in writing position there's no chance they will.(less)
