Traveling and reading have been passions of mine from an early age. I was fortunate to be born into a military family, and set off on my first overseas adventure when I was two months old. I have lived in eight countries on three continents, and have visited countless more. Reading began a bit later on. I have four older sisters, one of whom wanted very badly to become a teacher and taught me the magic of reading when I was five. I discovered libraries (they let you borrow books for free!) when I was seven, and there was no stopping me. I'm a lifelong reading addict.

I started writing relatively late in life, and couldn't believe what a natural extension it was from reading. Last year, during a three-month vacation to the UK, I began bloggin

When I traveled to Portugal seven years ago, I had very little notice and a difficult time finding good books on the subject. I had much more time to plan for my 2015 trip to Spain, however, and found several excellent books. If you only read one, make it James Michener's Iberia. (Although Portugal is also on the Iberian peninsula, this book is only about Spain.) I don't know if you've read Michener before. His books are long, but entertaining and fascinating, so stick with it. (Skim over the slow parts, if you want.) You'll learn a boatload about the country. I also enjoyed A Traveller's History of Spain by Juan La Laguna. It is a history book, but it's very readable. I liked the timeline format. It helps put their history in perspective.
Two outstanding fiction books are For Whom the Bell Tolls by Ernest Hemingway, for a good understanding of the Spanish Civil War, and Winter in Madrid by CJ Sansom--a more personal account of living in Spain during the Civil War. Enjoy!(less)

Why this book? (conclusion)

Once we arrived and were on the road, we fell into a routine each evening of going over the next day’s itinerary. Over time we started to modify our intended plan slightly—at first to accommodate the weather or our moods, but eventually because we were learning a better way to travel. Who would have thought that after more than fifty years of traveling there was anything I could learn about how to Read more of this blog post »
