Like a lot of people, Ben went to school, then college and eventually grew up and got a responsible job, a house and a family.

And then his mid-life crisis kicked in.

Realising that life was in danger of becoming all too serious, Ben started writing. Not in the way that Forrest Gump started running, but at least he started.

He wrote on steamed up mirrors in the bathroom to make his children smile. Eventually he graduated to making up stories to entertain his kids at bed-time.

For some reason his boys didn’t seem interested in his tales of everyday life, relationships, family, trauma, farce and the occasional bit of debauchery. His 12 year old son prefers JK someone or other.

Don't get too sidetracked reading a million blogs on how to write. Set yourself a clear writing goal - I.e. to write a novel, or a short story, or a poem or whatever it is you would like to do. And then try not to get side-tracked.

Your first attempt will not be perfect, but by the end of it you will be a better writer than you would have been if you had just read loads of stuff on how to write.(less)

Jaye, really sorry, I have only just noticed your question. I would have replied straightway had I seen it sooner.

I am afraid that the answer is that I haven't got a clue. Your guess is as good s mine. Probably better in fact! Remember, you are asking someone who doesn't know what he is doing when it comes to social media / web stuff.

Is it something to do with registering as a Goodreads author? Or maybe the people I follow are authors? I know that when you follow someone, they don't necessarily follow you back, but a 'friend' relationship is a mutual relationship.

The Age of Loneliness

age of loneliness

When I was first asked if I would consent to being featured in a documentary about loneliness, I was pretty nonplussed.

Although my wife and I had just split up and I was spending at least part of the week living on my own, I still hadn’t come to terms with my own feelings, let alone being ready to talk about them on camera.

Could I really go on the telly and tell people how bereft I felt?
