So dull, it will be a struggle to finish. The humour is tepid and largely laughing at the social inadequacies of others. Characters are caricatures and despite ostensibly interesting setting and period. Waugh transcends his Englishness in his satires ...more

Really fascinating about Holland during wartime and how some ordinary Dutch treated the Jews. A post war live story which forces people to look at their deeds with unflinching honesty. Probs a bit too much sex, which drags a bit. Moving , disturbing ...more

Fascinating subject matter, gripping, with its heart and mind in the right place. A bit generic and indeed with a character not unlike Robert “Generic “ MP. Slimy, cynical, amoral.

A wonderful debut, gritty realism with magical highlights, sad with frequent hilarity on which to surf the tragic soviet undertow. Georgia is magical; Georgia is full of rough enchantments- this novel captures both.
