When she was in the fourth grade, Hannah Rae couldn't fall asleep one night. She climbed out of bed, padded down the hallway to her parents' bedroom, and said, "Mom, I can't sleep." To which her mother replied, "Make up a story in your head." So Hannah created a cast of characters, and a setting, and a plot... and to this day, the first thing she thinks about when she snuggles under the covers each night are those characters and that setting. But the plot is always changing. ...more

It's not an Ian Fleming sort of adventure--there are no guns or disguises or private jets--but the plot does involve an awful lot of racing against the clock!(less)

I've found that if I'm not quite ready to write a book, then I shouldn't push myself to write that book. Instead, I distract myself by doing other things: planning an event, producing a new piece of artwork, experimenting with recipes in the kitchen... In other words, I continue to be creative, but not via writing.

Writing is a definite process. For me, that process tends to start with the characters. The stuff that I write is very character-driven. That means that if I'm not familiar with the characters--if they haven't introduced themselves to me and shared their stories--then I don't have much to say. Once I know who they are, though? Well, that's when things start to fall into place. (less)

Grape Jelly, Chili Sauce, and the Theatre

Have you ever gone to a party and dined on meatballs (or miniature wieners) marinated in grape jelly and chili sauce? The flavors shouldn't go together. Grape jelly and chili sauce? On paper, that combination sounds like a whole lot of weird. But in the crockpot? In the crockpot, that combination is magic. My friend (and coworker) Wes and I are kind of like grape jelly and chili sauce. On paper, w Read more of this blog post »

I loved this from the get go, but the ending is what secured a five-star rating. This book really makes a person think while also providing some shock value. I will recommend it to everyone.

I might’ve liked this better if I’d read it, but I listened to it and the narration was positively atrocious.
Hannah Rae is starting The Taken Ones: I think that if I’d read this book, I might’ve enjoyed it a bit more. As it is, I listened to it and the narrator was awful.
