OFF THE HOOK - Teaser Tuesday

Teaser Tuesday - snippet from OFF THE HOOK
Off the Hook (Fishing for Trouble, #1) by Laura Drewry

Everything she felt was right there, splashed across his wide blue eyes: a dash of “what the hell just happened,” mixed with a splash of “holy shit, we really shouldn’t have done that,” and shaken with a double shot of “when can we do it again?”

It was a cocktail for disaster that Kate couldn’t wait to get drunk on, but—ugh, why did there have to be a “but”?

“We, uh, we need to get back to the shack before they come looking for us,” she said.

Still a little dazed, Liam nodded. “Yeah.”
Neither one of them moved for another few seconds, and when Kate finally did step away, her foot went sliding out from under her. Quick as a flash, Liam’s hands were around her arms, catching her before she hit the floor.

“Whew,” she laughed. “Thank you, that wouldn’t have been pretty.”

“Sorry,” he mumbled, grinning guiltily. “I dropped my glass when you kissed me.”

“When I—you mean when you kissed me.”

“Whatever,” he laughed. “A heads-up next time’ll save some of the dishes, that’s all I’m sayin’.”

“So you think there’s going to be a next time, do you?”

Liam inhaled a long breath, then tipped his head a little to the side as though he couldn’t believe he was saying it. “God, I hope so.”

HOW FOREVER FEELS excerpt

How Forever Feels
How Forever Feels (Friends First, #4) by Laura Drewry
“Okay, but it’s not much of a story.” Maya frowned. “It was, what, four years ago . . . ish . . . and my roommate at the time—have you ever meet Louise, Ellie?—she got invited to this Hawaii-themed birthday bash for some woman she worked with, but she didn’t want to go by herself, so she dragged me with her. We’d barely made it in the door when she hooked up with some guy and deserted me.”

Ellie clicked her tongue. “Bitch.”

“Right? Anyway, I didn’t know anyone else there and had just called a cab when Jack here took pity on me. He brought over a piña colada, stayed until he could finally flag Dickhead over, and then he took off to do the limbo, which he sucked at, by the way. Ba-da-boom ba-da-bing, here we are today.”

“Ohhh.” Regan nodded, pointing at Maya’s drink. “Piña colada—got it. Okay.”

Maya turned to smile at Jack, but he wasn’t smiling; he was actually looking a little dumbfounded.

“You’re kidding, right?”

“What?”

“Seriously?” Shaking his head slowly, Jack lifted his bottle but blinked a few times before drinking. “How did that not make me look like a dipshit? Let’s try telling them what really went down that night.”

“What do you mean? I did.”

“Ooooh.” Ellie clapped her hands together and leaned forward. “I haven’t even heard it yet and I already like Jack’s version better. Spill it.”

Jack hesitated, chuckled quietly then downed a good shot of his beer.

“Will had an on-again-off-again thing going with the birthday girl. That’s why we were there.”

“He was with someone else that night?” Maya growled. She shouldn’t have been surprised, but still. “Figures.”

“Sonuvabitch,” Ellie muttered.

Jack lifted his hands. “Hold on. In his defense, I think they were off at that point but were still . . . Anyway, when I saw Maya and her friend come in, I figured there was no way someone like her could possibly be single, so I kept waiting for some guy to show up. No one did, and I couldn’t just leave her sitting there, looking all kinds of pathetic in her grass skirt and plastic lei . . .” Laughing, he dodged the elbow Maya jabbed at him. “So I grabbed a couple drinks and headed over.”

“Oh.” Jayne’s soft sigh floated across the table, followed immediately by Regan’s snort.

“Are you freakin’ kidding me?” she asked. “Maya picked Dickhead over you?”

“What?” Maya sputtered as she shook her head. “No!”

“I think you did,” Ellie said. “Sure sounds that way.”

“That’s not what he meant. Jack wasn’t hitting on me, he was—”

“Maya.”

“What?” Her tongue froze the second her gaze locked on Jack’s. “You were?”

His warm hazel eyes wide, Jack shrugged slightly and laughed over the rim of his bottle. “There’s only two reasons a guy buys a girl a drink, Snip: He’s either trying to pick her up or he’s trying to apologize.”

Prima Donna Mini Excerpt

Prima Donna by Laura Drewry

Excerpt from Prima Donna

“So are you going to tell me what’s going on?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“Because it’s nothing.”
“It’s not nothing. Maybe I can help.”
“Jesus, Nick. Are we gonna work or have a therapy session? ’Cause if you don’t need my help, I’ve got other things I could be doing.”
“Yeah? Like what?” With slow, deliberate movements, Nick marked the board, ran his knife down the side of the straight edge, and snapped off the piece he didn’t need. “The only time you ever offer to help is when you’re hiding out from someone, and it’s usually the girl you picked up the night before.”
“Whatever,” Carter muttered, yanking the cut board upright.
“So it is a girl.” Nick hooked the screw gun onto his tool belt and helped Carter hoist the board up to the ceiling where they eased it into place. “Do I know her?”
“Can you focus here for a second please?”
“That’s a yes.”
“It’s a nothing,” Carter ground out. “Now are you gonna use that screw gun or are we just gonna stand here staring at each other all day?”
“Is that what Jayne’s worried about?” Nick waited until Carter had the board balanced, then moved to the corner to fire the first screw. But he didn’t; there was nothing but silence for a couple seconds. “Jesus, Carter, are you screwing around with Maya now?”
“What? No!”
“Ellie?”
“God no!”
“Who then?” Finally the gun fired once, then stopped again. “Holy shit! It’s not Regan, is it?”
Carter was pretty sure it was the unbalanced weight of the drywall, held straight above his head, that made his arms twitch like that, but unless he wanted a four-by-six-foot piece of plaster crashing down on both of them, he needed Nick to focus. Instead, his cousin just stood there staring at him and shaking his head slowly.
“It is Regan, isn’t it?”
“Uh, Nick . . . the board? It’s getting kinda heavy.”
“Jeez, Carter, what the hell are you thinking?”
“Nick. Seriously. Screw the damn board in.”
“And you told Jayne? Are you nuts?”
“For Christ’s sake, screw the fuckin’ board in!”
There was a moment’s hesitation before the gun fired again in rapid succession, and Carter could finally lower his arms.
“You and Regan?” The look on Nick’s face was nothing short of dumbfounded. “I thought that was just a one-time thing.”
“So did I,” Carter grunted. “I mean it was.”

Friday Files

I had a few different ideas for my very first Friday Files blog, but as is the way with most things here at Chez Drewry, one thing led to another and I sort of got off-task. This time, though, I have a good excuse.

You see, tomorrow is my youngest son's birthday, and as I'm wont to do on such occasions, I found myself going through his baby album ooh'ing and aah'ing over what a beautiful baby he was. Correction: is . He's still beautiful, even at 14. Really. LOL

Anyway, during the first week of school, his kindergarten teacher had all of the children draw a picture of what they thought they were going to look like in their very first official school photo. And this is what my little darling drew:

description

I laughed just as hard this morning as I did when he brought it home almost 9 years ago, the only difference being that 9 years ago, I waited until he was out of ear-shot before I laughed.

Thankfully, this is not how he actually looked in his first official school photo. In the actual photo, he was, of course, absolutely beautiful.

Anyone else have fun school projects like this?
