My Monday thank you goes to Thai Lee, the owner, CEO and president of the largest female-owned business in America, SHI International Corp. She was born in Bangkok, Thailand, and during her teens moved to America with her older sister. She has a bachelor degree in biology and economics and an MBA from Harvard Business School.
In 1989, Lee and her husband purchased a small division of a struggling software company in New Jersey. They changed the company name to Software House International. Under Thai Lee’s leadership, SHI transformed from a $1 million reseller into a $6 billion global provider of information technology products and solutions with 25 offices around the world.
In a business world that worships short-term investments and fast IPOs, SHI remind privately-held and has experienced incredible growth in size and scope through neither merger nor acquisition. The company “simply” invests in its high-skilled work force, products and services.
Thai Lee is one of the leading ladies in the American Industry, but many of you probably have never heard of her. She lives at the same house for the last 20 years; her office is surrounded by junior employees cubical farm, she doesn’t have an assistant, and manage her own calendar. That proves that modesty, hard-work, and talent can be enough for success. People who don’t have those three will usually make a lot noise to compensate.
Gerhard Richter, a German visual artist, said: “I don't dare to think my paintings are great. I can't understand the arrogance of someone saying, 'I have created a big, important work.”
I think this is the essence of excellence.
